The tailor fit pants at BR are definitely something to check out. I really like that they are fit and very slim. Retail is about $79 but if you have the 30% off friends and family coupon, it's a good buy.

I just bought some Spring courts from revovle for 59$ after the 30% off. They are really comfortable but i was wondering why they retail at 85$ if they are just made from canvas and made in thailand. I could have bought some vans and put some dr. scholls gel pads for less. Just wondering.

Would sand suede clarks desert boots and black imperial kings work together? Im trying to find good shoes to wear with black jeans...Any suggestions?

Ok, its the start of the second quarter, you have 1000$ to buy an entire wardrobe for a second year university student. All he owns are shoes, socks and underwear, and a jack spade messenger bag. What do you buy? Where do you buy it, what should I budget this fund on? Spend 400$ on jeans then spend more on the basics (remember I only have shoes, socks and underwear). Help me styleforum, help me acheive an aura of style. Edit: I don't need a winter coat but I wouldn't mind a fall coat and would go over the 1000$ cap to get a good fall coat. Thanks again. Edit2: If it changes things I have brown hair, 6 foot and 185lbs and in decent shape so I wont need any real alterations.

I probably wouldn't buy $400 worth of denim one-shot. Get two pairs to rotate with, maybe one indigo and one black if you're trying to diversify, and call it a day. Pick up a pair of chinos. That'll be around $3-400 depending on what exactly you buy and from where. Don't know where you live but I'll assume it'll be cold in the next few months so pick up a few l/s shirts and maybe a nice jacket/hoodie or two. Sounds pretty solid. Places for jeans at a discount: Farinelli's, Secret Service. Chinos: Farinelli's (RRL), Secret Service (Crate), Michael J Krell. L/S shirts: any of the affiliates, both MJK and Farinelli's have some great flannels. Secret Service, too. Jackets: any of the affiliates. Nice Collective makes some great ones so check out Farinelli's blog. For fall I have my MJK Whodini 2.0 that I absolutely love. Hoodies: take a look at Michael J Krell.

I endorse them. When the harsh weather hits and I don't feel like wearing a scarf, I wear them. I only own one though, I think that's plenty.

Whodini thanks for your response, I live in Toronto so it does get a tad chilly. I will look at all of your recommendations in the next little while. Again thanks a bunch.

I think black denim gives you some good options in color to play with. I think grey tones (like the sand suede) would work well. I picked up a pair in taupe that I also think would work well. I'm not familiar with the imperial kings hem opening, but some some boots in brown, olive, burgundy variety would work well too IMO.

Hi there.

I am considering wearing a (dark) grey suit with a black shirt. It's a rather public event, so I do not want to take any risks.

What do you think?

This is a complicated question because you basically provide with no info on 1.) what you currently have 2.) current style and 3.) weather conditions.

1.) I understand that you have shoes. But what kind of shoes? Are we talking sneakers, dress shoes, boots or what? Because I would personally recommend having at least one pair of nice dress shoes/boots. They completely upgrade an entire outfit.

2.) Again, what's your current style? If it's a fairly generic, SF uniform or generic college uniform? Are you happy with your current uniform or are you looking to upgrade? Do yo wear dressier clothes, collar shirts, sweaters, blazers, jackets or just tee shirts and hoodies all the time?

3.) Are you in an area with cold winters/fall? Lot's of rain? Too warm to layer all the time? Should I be recommending a jacket or seersucker shorts?

$1000 is an awful lot to drop on clothes by basically asking an anonymous group of online people to dictate what you should buy.

I have sneakers, 2 pair running shoes and birks, I have been looking to possibly get a pair of Redwing GT's in Cherry. Would this count as a 'dress' boot? I have a pair of Florsheims for dressier events. My current style is pretty bland/oversized clothing. I havent purchased much lately ie. years and when I was younger I would buy stuff so I could grow into it, well turns out I am not going to grow that much more. I am in Toronto so lots of snow, low/med rain and maybe to warm to layer if it is mid july.

Alright much better.

Here's what I would recommend.

Sweaters: A basic you might want to stock up on.

-1 or 2 V-Neck is solid safe colors, dark gray or navy. If you want to branch out a little bit, try green or red. Find whatever brands fit you best, which in your case could range anywhere from GAP to Margiela. Chances are you can find something that will fit you just fine without breaking the bank.

-Optional but a great addition to your wardrobe, invest in a different kind of sweater. Maybe a nice Nom de Guerre chunky knit, or W+H shawl neck or something that's a little bit out there but still safe. Make you stand out just slightly. If you can find a cheaper alternative to the brands I listed then go for that option.

Shoes: Your best investment, this is the area where you should sink most of your money in (unless you get nice outerwear/suits).

-Redwing GT's would be a casual boot. Would you wear them with a suit? Probably not.
-I would say either a dress boot in black, or 1 pair of boots (can be redwings) then one pair of dress shoes. You can rotate both between dressy and non-dressy outfits.

-Paul Smith, John Varvatos, Buttero, NDC all make great shoes/boots that are dressy but still work great in casual settings. If you want "real" dress shoes ask the MC forum, they know more than I do. These are not cheap and very pricey so you might want to see what deals you can get.

Shirts/Tees/Polos: Basic staples, just stock up on a few well fitting affordable ones you can. Start off with 2-4 of each and you will be fine. Same with sweaters, if you can find nice ones at Old Navy or Gap or whatever then stick with that, you should have no problem finding fitted shirts. If not, try JCrew as their shirts often hit discount range. You can afford to skimp on shirts.

Outerwear:
-Pick up something to keep you warm. Maybe 2 jackets if the weather requires you to wear one everyday and you might get tired.
-Shades of Griege, Nom de Gurre, Wings + Horns, APC are all brands that pump out nice outerwear and jackets if you're looking to drop cash. If not, you can stop in any H&M/Zara or probably even Nordstroms.
-Specific examples you might want to look into: Peacoats, Topcoats, Puffer Jackets, Duffle Coats, M65's.

Jeans
-You really only need one pair. I went through my entire senior year on my pair of jeans and I was fine. Maybe go for a more slim straight look? There are tons of entry level brands such as APC, Crate, Naked & Famous.
-Or, if you want, go budget and get Levi's STF

Since you have so little money, hit up the sales racks at the local shops (Barneys, Nordstroms, etc). Hit up the SF affiliates for awesome discounts. Hit up the Buying & Selling forum for GREAT deals. Before you make each purchase think "Do I really need this? Will I really wear this? Will this last me long enough to justify the price?".

Also, go slowly. Don't blow all your money all at once, look at how each piece fits into or changes your wardrobe rotation. Your tastes may develop, change, and differ over the next few months. Expose yourself to as many different sources as you can and see what you like and don't like.
