Question about rises: I'm looking at APC New Cures and Nudie Slim Jims because they have sizes with a 9 inch rise. How far below the navel is a 9 inch rise? I guess I should say I'm 5'5" and usually wear 30/32 inseams. Another part of this question is where should I measure on my body for a waist measurement if it's a 9 inch rise? I think I've read that SJs sit on the on the hips or something.

June,

You can wear those jeans at whatever height you like, from as high as 3-4 inches below your navel to as low as the middle of your ass (the "slouchy" look). I think that at 5'5" you will look good in a 9" rise; on 6' tall guys, on the other hand, I think such a low rise tends to look crappy unless the guy keeps the waistband and rise hidden underneath shirts.

If you want to wear the jeans at a "normal" height, you probably want to measure yourself about 4" below your navel, then buy a jean that's 1 or 2" smaller than that in its actual waistband measurement (since Nudies and APCs both stretch a lot).

Im 5'5", 32 waist and I just got a pair of APC NS (30 waist) which have (i believe) a 10.75" rise and I love the fit. For me 10-11" rise is perfect, just enough package room while still being flattering. You could go lower I guess with 9" but for me the NS are low enough. I also downsized to a 30 and they fit perfect which means they will stretch a tad big but no big deal cuz I rock a belt anyway.

Asch: Thanks a ton. Finding the right place to measure my waist has been bugging me for a couple days now. I'll finally be able to settle on size.

underwearer: Do you sag a little bit? Does that 10.75" rise cover your navel?

Nope they fit perfect. I wear all my jeans a few inches (about3") below the navel. As comparison I have a pair of Levis 529 low straights on now and those are just noticeably higher (10") but not much.

Remember everybody is different so all this info is just a guide...but again we are talking jeans here and pretty good cuts so they are forgiving a little.

I am 6'3 200 lbs. I don't like jeans too tight, but want a pair that fits my body and does not look like I hang out with Snoop Dogg, and that I can wear both drivers and sneakers with. Any suggestions?

I bought a jacket that I thought looked really nice on ebay, a linen Ralph Lauren 38R. I took it to my tailor, who I've been to any number of times, and he thought the fit was terrible. He said it would need to have a ton of alterations, taking in the shoulders and the sides.

Well, fine. But isn't 38 about as small as men's jackets get? Do I have to shop in the kid's section from now on?

For what it's worth, I'm about 6' and 145 pounds. I'm clearly a skinny guy, but I don't feel as though I'm freakishly narrow. I generally wear a medium t-shirt, for example.

Your average department store sizes may stop at 38, but size 36 jackets are relatively easy to find. Mexx and Zara both make affordable jackets in size 36.

Assuming we're talking denim, cold soaking is best if you're looking to minimize color loss and shrinking; hot soaking is best for visa-versa.
