In our little corner of Asia it's also considered bad luck to give shoes to one's partner but for a different reason. It's believed that the by giving footwear to your partner you're allowing that person to step on you. Our quick fix is we always give a token payment (like 1 peso) to the giver to formally make it a purchase rather than a gift.

I've heard a variant of that in the United States:  Never give your girlfriend shoes or she'll walk away from you.
