thoughts on trouser rise?

Hi Gents,

I am struggling a bit to find trousers that work for me. It seems that some of the American designers that I like have a long rise - maybe 10-11 inches. I am 6'1" but have a long waist and only about 31" inseam so it seems the long rises dont really work for me.

As I look for trousers with shorter rises, any suggestions on designers? I have heard that European ones generally have a shorter rise. Hugo Boss seems to work pretty well but I would like to find a bit higher quality.

Any thoughts most appreciated.

You mean wool pants? What is your waist size? The budget doesn't seem low, but what is the maximum?

Incotex and Mabitex offer short rises. They can be found at Shop the Finest and Virtual Clotheshorse,
both Style Forum affiliates which sell online. Also check out Howard Yount. ( SF affiliate) He sells
real quality for the price. For Howard Yount some of the rise measurements do not include the
waistband. For Shop the Finest, unless the policy has changed, only store credit is offered for
returns.

Thanks guys.

I will check out Incotex and Mabitex and Howard Yount.

It looks like Phineas Cole (and Paul Stuart) have shorter rises - 9 inches or so - and seem to work for me. A bit pricey but I am learning the value of having a good fit.

I am looking for wool pants - probably spring weights now. My waist is about 35 inches. I probably dont want to go over $400 per pair, less if possible.

I'll take advantage of the momentum of this thread to ask the opposite - what's a good slim fitting OTR trouser with a higher rise (ie at the natural waist, close to the navel in my case)? I recently purchased a pair from Epaulet which off the rack has a higher rise than the pair of Howard Yount pants I have, but unlike those HY didn't have any excess fabric to be let out at the crotch area. I'm thinking about something like the following, in terms of rise and slimness (not necessarily pleats):

try Attolini or Borrelli.. Do you live around NYC? If those don't work or aren't an option you're going to have to get a pair of pants made for you.

edit: I have no experience with the Incotex from Shop the Finest or Virtual Clotheshorse—They might carry the European cut, but Incotex carried at Saks/Bergdorf/Barneys will probably have too long a rise.

new Spring/Summer 2013 trou from Brioni.. slimmer cut than ever before but still high rise. Unfortunately only offered in 150s, which is a little high...

if you have shorter legs, you'd WANT higher/longer rise pants to give the appearance of longer legs
it will make your proportions look more balanced
instead of looking like you have stumpy legs and a long upperbody

I like Express's wool pants. I've had one pair for 10 years now and they're only starting to get a little fuzzy where the crotch rubs together. You'd be surprised by the quality of their 100% wool pants. They also have the little rubber knurlings in the waistband that help your shirt stay tucked in. But the rise is very low, so low you'd have difficulties wearing boxers with those pants. The other option is to check out some ladies pants. Sometimes the only difference between ladies pants and mens pants is the rise. Unless you are in pretty good shape, it won't be very flattering. If you have any gut at all, it'll just exaggerate it. If your lower body isn't chisseled it might look like you are exploding out of those low rise pants.
