It sort of seems like a "let's push the envelope and see how shItty we can make 'black tie' look."

I was recently at a black tie optional event here in Chicago and someone showed up in jeans, a sweatshirt and a backwards facing baseball cap. That's what I call not giving a f*ck.

Because he's not trying to make a statement about not giving a fuck. He's not trying to "push the envelope". He just actually doesn't really give a fuck about how much shirt cuff he's showing, and probably thought, hey this black leather tie looks cool in a campy way - that'll be great for the Oscars.

I don't feel like showing up high out of his mind would really change things for QT.

Y'all are really giving QT way too much credit. I know we're on a clothes forum here, but where "ignorance is bliss" meets "too successful to be bothered" is where you'll find QT.

And, unlike a lot of the other celebrities, I'm sure he doesn't have a "stylist" or "consultant" or whatever, so you can't even make the argument that anyone would tell him something better to do.

He should have just showed up in a 70s pimp costume or a velvet tux...it's better to make a statement than to just look sloppy. It's like when the South Park guys were nominated...they showed up dressed in drag as hookers. Now THAT is a statement!!!

I think the only advice kristen stewart can provide anyone is where to buy vicodin by the barrel.

I think you might have misunderstood what I meant. My thought is that if you truly 100% don't give a f*ck, why bother with the tux to begin with. An awful abomination pretending to be black tie seems like it would take more effort. Maybe not; maybe he gives enough of a f*ck to wear black and white or it's just easier to throw on something that looks similar to what others may wear. Who knows. I guess I more don't get why we don't see more outfits that don't even pretend to be a tuxedo from people who truly don't care.

That said, I do think that your explanation seems reasonable.

I think there is a basic level of dress that one must adhere to to gain entry to the awards, as set by the Academy, no? If not, perhaps some sort of unwritten agreement? It seems a tie for men is the bare minimum. I'm no expert, but I don't think I've ever seen someone with an open neck or wearing a t-shirt or something like that. I assume that's by design, because if not the bar would undoubtedly fall lower. It's also one of those things where he probably sees other people wearing black suits/tuxes and says, "This is what everyone is doing, but I'll add my own 'touch.'"

Again, I know everyone here loves drawing parallels between their clothing and pomp or circumstance. However, you need to realize that there are some people who don't care or don't know, just like the rest of the world. Assuming that a celebrity would know better or care to learn makes assumptions based on their cultural position, which I initially said is a flawed view.

There's a difference between not really giving a fuck and WANTING to say "fuck you" with what you're wearing (which is what tshirt and jeans would be), which entails actually giving a fuck.

Also, I'm sure he put some thought into it - the fact that the tie is half-untied both on the red carpet and for his acceptance shows that. It's just the anti-classy.

Stop trying to defend QT based on his film's aesthetic etc. etc. He dressed like a douche bag, end of story.

As a second thought, if there's no such thing as bad press, then the fact that we've spent more time talking about his fit than any other validates any possible underlying motivations he may have had (though I doubt any are there).

So, yeah, given what goals most people are trying to "accomplish" with what they wear to the Oscars (get people talking), I'd say QT is winning in SF-land. Which is a huge win since he's reading this right now and all...

No...I think the way that fits are attacked in WAYWRN would really put him off...he loves violence, but even HE has a limit.

Eddie Redmayne knocked it out of the park
