Oscars: 2013 Black Tie Trumphs and Tragedies - Page 9

Hard to tell, but it doesn't appear that Servillo is wearing a belt. Paolo Sorrentino (pictured right), the director, however, is wearing a belt and looks pretty terrible all around.

Ah sorry I mistook one for the other - that's the guy I meant. Will correct my post.

I do think studs add a lot to a tuxedo though.

I wear my tuxedo with a covered-placket shirt, so I'm a bit biased. I will say I think they add a bit of interest, but I still like the more minimalist approach. To each their own, I suppose.

Some of the best, in my opinion:

Bradley Cooper

Harrison Ford. Needs a waist covering; I didn't see that when he was on stage.

Chiwetel Eijofor

Brad Pitt. Pants too long, as his usually are, but those lapels were the best of the night.

Kevin Spacey

Christoph Waltz

Sam Jackson - this daylight shot makes his suit look gray, but on stage it looked black with a nice sheen, like silk or mohair.

Some near misses:

Chris Hemsworth. Almost a nice 1960s look with the maroon smoking jacket. The matching vest was just too much, IMO.

Jared Leto. IMO the red bow is too distracting. A black one, or even a very dark wine one, would have been much better.
oscars.jpg

Zac Efron. Fit is not bad; the skinny long tie ruins it.

Chris Evans. Needs to size up and ditch the long tie.

Benedict Cumberbatch. Looks like a funeral director.

Matthew McConaughey. Thought the jacket was nice; black waistcoat and pocket square were too much.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Thought the DJ's pattern/texture was kinda interesting, but that plus the red lapel pin AND turquoise socks was annoying.

Tyler Perry could have been great with a black tie.

I noticed JGL's socks too when he was onstage.

I wasn't feeling the smoking jacket on Hemsworth either....or the blue one Jim Carrey had. It did nothing to complement Thor's considerable physique. Frankly, I thought it was kind of effeminate.

I was on the fence about Brad's shawl collar....it certainly made a statement though, and dude can wear whatever he wants to.

The awful:

Bill Murray dyed one of Mark Twain's linen suits black.

John Travolta is now a mobster.

John Ridley is the hitman Travolta's going to hire to kill you.

I think Jim Carrey's jacket must have had batteries in it.

Michael Strahan...too many blows to the head?

Michael B. Jordan broke all the rules, thoroughly.

There are no words.

Travolta's sartorial choices were the least of his problems last night.

I don't know what the hell got into Strahan....he is usually quite well-dressed. He must have sold his soul to a designer.

Honestly, I was mostly pretty pleased last night. Most of Hollywood's real top-level royalty seem to be eschewing dark shirts, long ties, and crazy ridiculousness in favor of more classic fits. The worst transgressions were mostly among the B-list celebs and producer types.

john legend slayed. super low buttoning point, could have used a waist covering. but i still liked the look a lot. sleeves are too long, but considering everyone else....

Shirt sleeves too long on him. Jacket sleeves too long on almost everyone. Strange that men's awards season style has been improving for years, yet sleeves remain a problem that media "experts" ignore.

Servillo was in Attolini (as for all the suits, shirts and accessories worn in the movie itself). Sorrentino was in Armani (sigh)
