I didn't resist to visit EG and Lobb store in Paris during my lunch break one hour ago.

The sales guy at Lobb show me all the finishing differences between the City II and the Philip II. I do understand now the premium price for the Prestige line. Moreover when you include the shoe tree the difference is not that big. He also told me that I could order my Philip II in Museum Calf with no extra cost (I was afraid of that since Museum colors are not available anymore on their website).

On the other hand I laso fell in love with the Edward Green Berkeley in 202 last. I had the feeling these shoes would be easier in both casual and dressy way whereas the Philip II are definitively more dressy shoes to my eyes.

Honestly, I would buy the EG Berkeley on a 202 last in Dark Oak over City II in a hearth beat!

Based on what? Design? Quality? Personnal experience with both brands?
Thank you for your help.

Unfortunately I don't have any Edwardian EG's! It's pretty close though to Almond CC, which is similar to Edwadian.

After some great photography from No Frills and extensive Advice you decide on the a pair of EG.

3 points and 6 months ban on the JL thread :-)

The City II (7000 last) is classic, timeless. Between it and the Chigwell - also a great shoe (2511 last) - I personally would get the City II on last alone.

Nikola, as I recall, is on record saying (1) the 7000 last of the City II is too pointy, and (2) any (or most) EG last(s) outside of the traditional round 202 is too pointy.

I have EG's Edwardian. Judging by the picture, the answer appears to be yes.

Great memory!

Everything you wrote is correct. That is why I sent rexet a PM, as I didn't want to talk about the EG shoes in a JL thread further than that. I'm still behind my words, but that's just me. I really do find the 7000 last to be elongated for a formal and suit shoe. Even compared with the EG 82 last it looks pointy. EG 202 is a classic cap toe IMO.

After having seen them in the store, if I choose JL I would go for the City II or Philip II. I found the Chigwell too narrow for my taste.

And I do appreciate smile.gif

To be really honest whatever the final choice I know for sure I will own both brands in a very near future.

It's all a matter of personal taste of course. Do you own, or have you seen IRL, the 7000 last? I ask because the 7000 last isn't nearly as pointy as it appears it some pictures. For example, the 7000 last pictured in post 1022 looks much pointier than the 7000 last pictured in post 1166, with post 1166 being, IMO, a much better example of what it actually looks like. I have various models on the 7000 last, including the City II. I also have various EG models on the 202, including the Chelsea.

The 7000 last is one of the best dress shoe lasts, regardless of maker.

The reason I don't own the 7000 last is because it's too pointy :D .. I had a chance comparing it with 202 and 82 EG last ..

Jokes aside, at this level of craftsmanship it really comes down to a personal preference.

I am 100% sure rexet will purchase the John Lobb on 7000 last. When it comes down to a first pair of expensive shoes, most people wants a John Lobb. It sounds so cool too when someone asks you "what are those"  to say - they are John Lobbs..

And if he goes with his wife to shopping- JL 7000 purchase is imminent ..

Let's see if I am right .. :D
