I have a 35" true waist size and bought New Standards in 34 for a slightly relaxed fit. If I wanted them to be quite slim fitting, I'd have sized down two. If you don't know what your true waist size is (different than what you normally wear) measure it, with a measuring tape.
To refine that to where it begins to approach absurdity, my waist measures about 34.5", and a 33 NS fits me comfortably -- not slim/tight, but not loose either.
But use as a starting point your circumference, not your pants "size", which varies widely from brand to brand (or even within brands).
