Bargains for Big Guys: Reprise

All right, I really am starting to get a complex here. I don't think I know anyone who is a 38 short, or who wears a size 8 shoe. Big fellas are not all that rare. Is there a particular reason why their togs are? Is it because the small sizes are the rare ones, and go un-purchased?

Not being snide, I am just truly vexed by this. I'm not sure I've seen a size 13 shoe or a 48L since I joined the site.

What up?

Larger sizes are fairly rare on this forum to some degree. There seems to be a great deal of 44-46 stuff available, but sizes larger than that seem to be quite rare. You can find a lot of it on ebay, though.

I think there are a couple issues.

In the instance of boutique shopping for.. pricey casual wear, for instance, they don't stock as many large sizes because stereotypically, not as many large people buy the clothes.

I don't see too many size 13s and 46+ (I'm an 11 / 42-44R for reference) even when I'm at department stores. So, you must then think, when the supply is scarce to begin with, it has to make it through a couple rounds of sales and whatnot to show up here.

I have some 13Ds and some 46L suits. What ya looking for? I will take pics if needed.

Brother, I feel your pain. Most of the boutiques(as kronik stated) rarely,if ever stock a size 13 shoe or anything over a 36 waist(with 34 usually the end point). Anything over a 34 inseam is rare, as well. It's gotten to the point that either one has to lose weight, or settle for department store clothing. There are a few that are nearly the same size as I am (drizzt, EdMan, kronik, to name a few) but on this forum , we are all members of a very small fraternity

I'd be interested in 13 D's and 44's and 46's.

I'm with regarding the 13 D's. But I can't sympathize with your having a tough time finding a 46 Long. I wear a 48 XL and I have seen probably 10 times the number of 46 Longs as XLs. Recently there was a huge shipment of Oxxford, Brioni, and Canali suits to the local Filene's Basement stores and while there were plenty of Longs, there was not a single XL.

Just out of curiosity, how tall are you and what is your inseam? I'm 6'4" and wear a L but sometimes I wonder if I should be wearing XL.

I sometimes find big stuff and don't pick it up for fear that it won't sell. If there's a market, I'll start grabbing it. L sizes especially I tend to shy away from because it's just a much smaller market and thus commands a lower price (one would think).

You can find a lot of garbage, yes, but not a lot of quality.

It is very rare to find "bargains" for us who are large in size. Although I am working on that resolution now. Many store cater to the smaller size folks because that is their true bread and butter. We must resort to catalog shopping or Big/Tall shops where many things in there are just not fun to wear. I can find some nice things in the catalog, you might check them out as well. Great responses guys, and very thoughtful. I am 6' 3", 215 lbs. Size 40 waist, 33 inch inseam.

I've tried XLs, but they are way long in the sleeves. I just bought a Hickey Freeman DB blazer on ebay in a 48XL, and my arms flap inside of it.

I'm 6'5", 32" inseam - all torso. Most longs don't even cover my ass. Interestingly, although I'm a 48 XL in any American cut suit or sport coat, I tried on a 54 L Zegna suit that was a great fit for the coat. I didn't even bother to try on the trousers because even discounted to $800 from $2000+, I wasn't going spend $800 on a fused suit. But it was a sweet fabric -- charcoal gray with a subtle purple stripe.

Zegna mainline suits are fully canvassed. $800 is a bit pricey for them, by this forum's standards, but not completely outrageous. I guess I don't find it very difficult to get clothing in my size online or on ebay, and I mostly buy things in 46 or larger and cut them down to fit my waist. I'm between 6'1" and 6'2" (187 cm) and 230 lb with a fairly long torso but I prefer jackets in regular length in terms of jacket length but require sleeves in long, and 31" inseam for dress pants. I haven't found it to be too expensive or difficult to find stuff here or on ebay.
