WTF over-zealous police? - Page 346

Was there a point to this whole age thing, or was it just a fun aside (with a neat under layer of getting to bash the victim a little)?

I don't assume it's any better to shoot 97 year olds than 117 year olds.

What do you guys think of the HBO show The Night Of? About the criminal justice system in New York with a little bit of race thrown in, not too much, but wanted to know how accurate it is.

You're being a little too hard on yourself.

That being said, I limited the comment to "supposed centenarians" -- meaning people who are or claim to be over a hundred years of age. What I said was not just correct, but obviously correct.

As to whether there was ever a normal distribution, that's assuming people just estimated their ages for the heck of it. In fact, I believe it was usually to get eligibility for benefits. You can imagine how that affects the reliability. There's also the possibility, which you often see, that everyone just thought he was older than he actually ever formally claimed to be. It makes for a good story. I doubt the outrage media actually tried to verify the guy's age.

Regarding the reliability of claims of extreme old age, in general, I'm hardly the first person to have observed it, or that there's a racial disparity.

The guy fired five shots at the cops with a .357 magnum. I agree that it doesn't really matter how old he actually was. It's just an interesting aside.

What purpose does it serve to point out that there is a racial disparity in this context ?

Aren't 357 magnums really tough to shoot? The gun people I've talked to all don't enjoy shooting with that gun due to the kickback and power. I'm surprised that even at 97-107 years old he's still strong enough to handle 5 shots.

357 isn't the most pleasent round to shoot, but it isn't that bad.  It depends on a lot of factors.  If you're shooting a small frame, snub nose barrel, yes, that is pretty rough - just like shooting a sub-compact 40 or 9mm +P.

Odds are it was probably just a .22, anyhow.

Because he was 117, I bet it was a 22 short.

Aside from this guy being black, it's because the black experience in the rural south from the early 20th century is pretty well known and understood -- illiteracy, poverty, isolation, and all that; and it helps to illustrate just why we might not be confident how old someone is.

If he's 117, it was obviously chambered in .17 HMR.

That was my initial thought too, but it wasn't developed until 2002.

Well, the consensus in these parts is that once you start casting minorities reality goes out the window.

What are the odds he overestimated his chambering?
