WTF over-zealous police? - Page 217

Update: facebook tells me he has been released.

Probably only an hour or so in custody, must be good to not be black and to have a judge you can call. Otherwise you'd probably be sitting in a cell for assaulting an officer that was so close to making it home safely.

Teenager gets pulled over, goes all Piob Jr. on the cop, refuses to give the cop his ID or cooperate with the stop. Cop goes to arrest him, but kicks the kid's cell phone away, which causes him to go berserk. Cop shoots him after taser fails.

You didn't quote the best part:
Quote:
(The officer) thought the teen may have calling in reinforcements from a local "sovereign citizen or militia movement."

Hah.

Might as well just admit that you didn't like being filmed. Doesn't change the justification of using force in self-defense, just makes the cop look like a dick before the kid freaked out and attacked him.

On that cold night in February, Patterson arrived at the scene of the traffic stop shortly after Guilford was shot, the prosecutor's report said.

It was Patterson's car that Guilford had been driving to her house. It was she that he had called in the middle of the traffic stop, and she'd picked up only to hear what sounded like "someone was running or out of breath" the report said.

She had brought Guilford's wallet and driver's license, the report said. He had left them at her house.

So he actually had a license just didn't have it on his person.  I thought that infraction was at most an on the spot ticket which normally would get thrown out in traffic court

I guess I should have read the accompanying article.

During the video the kid says he does have the license with him.

Kid had weed in the car too.

Situation just scans like the kid decided to put in practice some Cracked article he had read on his rights, probably because he was nervous about the weed. He even got the "am I being detained" in there. Ended up acting like a shitbag and wasn't complying with legal orders to identify himself and provide the license. Cop escalated, maybe a little tiny bit too much but seemed reasonable enough. Kicking away his phone was kind of a dick move, but whatever, complain after you go home. Kid jumped up, got hit with the tazer probes and freaked out. Who knows if the cop needed to shoot him, but he looked pretty fucked up after the fact.

Lousy situation, kid getting killed on a traffic stop that might not have been necessary, but I don't see how you can fault the cop too much on that. The kid created almost all of the escalation, outside of the cop trying to put him on the ground at the beginning.

There's a little bit of a factual problem with your characterization here:

Did the cop get home safe? That's all that really counts no matter the body count.

Try being more selective with your emphasis.

Nice try.

I guess I'm lucky I got out with my life, eh?

I am at a loss as to how you could read my comment to mean the kid did everything exactly as you did, instead of just a tongue-in-cheek observation about his general attitude as it was intended.
Well, if he was some "self sovereign" type guy as the article seems to allege, our attitudes are not really comparable either. I'm all about civilization.
Yeah, yeah, and he has blonde hair and yours is more flaxen. Don't know what I was thinking in making the comparison. Happy?

I see the DEA agent that was all kind of rogue over Bitcoin only got six years...and of course, the Silk Road guy is still serving life even though it's pretty clear evidence was illegally gathered against him.
