Watch them claim he tried to grab one of their guns. It's become the new "stop resisting!" alibi for use of force.

Looks like the homeless dude caught the "sellout mothafucka" with a punch, and with all the adrenaline the Cop's brain went into caveman mode. Doubt anything will happen to the Cop, and don't expect any Ferguson type activity to occur. Even though in this case, they actually have video footage.

Is it just me or are cops getting even more trigger happy?

I think it has to do with the media. I just think they are reporting it more and they are slightly more critical or suspicious of police today.

Exactly. Cops been killing civilians since forever in this country. It's only recently since there are videos that contradict their bullshit stories that middle America is willing to look at their behaviour with a skeptical eye.

We should keep in mind the distinction between justified killings and unjustified killings. There are instances where cops shoot because they are being shot at, stabbed at, or having their weapon grabbed at. Sometimes people shoot at cops to commit suicide by cop.

Don't know about that. I think in the poor urban areas people have always known about Police brutality. Only difference is that now you can record abuse with a $50 dollar cell phone. Just think about the Rodney King incident. A white dude in Simi Valley recorded that beating with a $1000 Sony camcorder.

Our country was definitely more violent in the late 60s and early 70s. "Crime" was the number one issue in many political races back then. Even before the Economy and Foreign Affairs!

The 24 hour media cycle and social media have changed things.

Good point. Shooting at cops is generally justified.

I'm not sure how rigorous their training is, but four healthy, somewhat trained officers should be able to figure out how to subdue a homeless man without shooting him. There shouldn't even be a situation where he's reaching for the officer's gun.

I hear choke holds work for that kind of thing.

American police must be hating the Guardian these days. This article details how annual FBI statistics account for fewer than half of police homicides.

Pretty clearly, the police exclude the majority of police-committed homicides from these statistics on justifiable homicides for the very obvious reason that most police homicides are not justified. It's unclear how the Graun's reporters missed that.

Two possible solutions to solve the homocide-by-cop problem:

First, a corporate police force. Get government inefficiency and incompetence out of the way.

Second, no police force. Shootings could be adjudicated in the civil courts.
