Honest question- custom suit vs. designer names

I haven't been on here for a while. I saw this question before, but instead of an answer, the poster got called names for asking.

Here is my query. A travelling custom suit salesman comes to my area - not a visiting Thai tailor (bought a couple of those, and  not worth the money.) He is semi local, but the suits are made in America, I think.  He makes very nice suits with all of the touches I like- surgeon's cuffs, cuff protectors and the like. However, even with great fabric they don't cost as much as some of the fancy name suits I see at chain stores or even small clothing shops. Is there some reason I am better off to buy a fancy name brand instead of getting a nice suit custom made for me?

Sorry if this a noob question- I am admittedly a philistine when it comes to nice clothing, but getting better.

I can't afford my local guy...frown.gif

Fortunately I live where America's royalty summahs and every season the thrift shops are full of treasures that I CAN afford plus my local guys tailoring.

win win

Well don't forget your buying direct from the "designer" if you like so pricing can be better. Your not paying for the fancy retail space and the stores mark up.

That said with a nice OTR suit it's a lot more simpler for people. They can see what they are buying and they can walk away with it quicker. I think these are the only advantages to designer suits. Of course though just as all designer suits are not of equal quality neither are the suits made by custom tailors so don't expect an $800 custom suit to be as well made as a Brioni.

The "fancy name" suits that you see in the department stores are priced so high because:

1) They're in department stores and have to make up for the cost of paying to get space in the stores.

2) They charge premium prices because of the company's name recognition and the department store's name recognition.

3) They know that some people will assume that higher prices mean better quality.

Whichever option you choose, make sure that the suit fits as well as possible. IMO, that's the most important issue. You should at least check out the traveling tailor to see what he has to offer.
