What to wear for an interview with a CEO of a small start-up tech company - Page 2

Nobody said put something political on your lapel; obviously you don't go into an interview looking for a political debate or wear anything deliberately provocative. We're talking about basic ties here, not politics. I would never assume anything about someone's political views based on the color tie they wore to an interview and find it pretty incredible that anyone would. Both blue and red (well, burgundy) are classic colors for men's ties. It's downright absurd to suggest that there's some hidden message you send relating to politics if you wear a tie of a certain color. Maybe avoid a tie with donkeys or elephants, but those sorts of ties have no place in an interview anyway (too informal, regardless of what they may connote).

Firing people for reasons other than competency is perhaps why these CEOs have business problems in the first place.

I'm a recent college grad and I've worked at a start up for the last three years. When I went to the interview for the statistician position, I wore a polo shirt, khaki slacks, with a pair of vans skate shoes. I got the job.

 

Tomorrow, I have another interview at another start up and I will definitely be wearing a suit and tie (no pocket square though).

Congrats on the update (both in approach and wardrobe).

In short, dress for the position (and pay/respect/etc.) that you aspire to, not just what you're looking to be hired for. The goal is to present as better that norm.
