I know I shouldn't be contributing to a resurrected-after-eight-months thread, but I have to address this:

No. No, no, no, no, no! Squats are *not* "hard on the knees" if done with properly. The problem is, so many guys (especially the under-30 set) think "more is better," in terms of weight. So, they load on the 45s and their form goes to shit, but they think they *are* the shit because, wow, look at all the plates on my bar! Woo hoo.

This is when squats become dangerous, this is when knee and back injuries happen. If you don't know how to do squats, you *need* to have an experienced personal trainer teach you how do do them properly. A buddy who's "been lifting for a long time" probably isn't good enough; I see *lots* of big, ripped mofos at my gym who have absolutely horrendous form. Looking at a "how to" blurb on a bodybuilding site isn't good enough either (it's hard to critique your own movements; a third party can do it best). That said, squats are among the "big compounds" (along with deadlifts, pullups, dips, bench presses, and so forth) which are the best resistance/weight training exercises a person can do, but you must must must must learn how to do them correctly, or risk injury. Anyway, yeah, go ask an exercise physiologist or kinesiologist; a properly-executed squat puts minimal strain on the knees.
