Watch Opinion: Glycine Eugene Meylan and Maurice Lacroix Pontos Small Seconds

I like the ML way better. I dont' know if it's still available, but there was a Roger Federer (of Tennis fame) edition of this watch, which I thought looked nicer - it might have been the contrasting color of the face, IIRC. Federer, changed his affiliations, however, and is now endorsing some other brand (I forget which). But in any event, I think this ML is nice. I remember in another thread I mentioned what turned me off about this watch is its lack of a date function. I know you can just look at your phone or crackberry or your outlook calendar for the date, but I feel a great watch, for the price you pay, has to at least tell you the date. Thus, I opted for an Oris instead.

For your consideration:

Ha! Your post must have gone up a few seconds before mine did. Weird. But fine, don't like my watch, dammit.

I might try to go see the Oris. Actually, I'll probably go try to see all of these before I buy. Since I live in Los Angeles, it probably won't be too difficult to find dealers.

As long as you don't pay retail price on any of them. My understanding with any watch dealer is that the retail price is only a starting point. I got my watch on "discount" from a friend's relative, I think 15%, but to think of it, it wasn't much of a discount considering if I entered an arm's length bargain with someone else, I could have knocked it down this much anyway. It should have been 15% on top of that for a real hook up. But whatever.

Does anyone have any opinions of these watches and any recommended dealers?

FYI, please note that both of the watches in your links are extremely large by dress watch standards. The Glycine is a pilot watch, so it gets a pass, but I have my reservations about the ML. Aesthetically, I strongly prefer the ML.

With regards to movement, the ML would be considered more desirable as compared to the Glycine in your original post and the Oris posted by tedriley. The Unitas 64XX generally makes for a better display back given the larger bridges. Personally, I like the case size and guilloche dial on the Oris the best.

I called Maurice Lacroix's US office to find out about where I could see it locally. I spoke with Carol there. She was very helpful. We had a very interesting conversation. We spoke a lot about the risks of buying the watch from a non-authorized dealer (of course she had a biased point of view). She told me some really horror stories about people sending in watches for service from non-authorized dealers, including multiple fakes and stolen watches which could not even be returned to the buyer.

As always....caveaut emptor.....however there are many reputable and trustworthy grey market dealers out there and I'm sure more than a few folks on here (myself included if you would like to send me a PM) can speak to their experiences.

FWIW, I believe the link I left for the Oris (world lux) is an authorized dealer of a number of brands.

Also, if you are inexperienced in buying watches, be sure that if you go to a B&M store you ask for a "cash price" which will be 20-25% off retail. In this day and age, you generally don't need to pay cash to get that price, although it may be the difference between 15% or 20 to 25% off.

Thank you, ChicagoRon. Yeah, I probably would end up buying one of these from an authorized dealer. I just don't want to take a chance over $125 difference. I could buy the ML for more than 25% off from WorldLux, a dealer that ML recommends. Plus, they are out of state and the offer free shipping. I have not researched the Glycine too much yet.
