a weightlifting injury?

So I just had to leave the gym early today after some weird back pain. I never get back pain!

I was declining freeweights (I do them 2 or 3 times a week) and I was about to do a pair of 60's (my max is 90's) and I went to lay back and got this nasty pain right on my waistline just an inch to the left of my spine. I tried it again with 50's and it just felt wrong so I stopped. Feels like something needs to be popped back into place or something. I tried a veriety of stretches afterward and that just caused more pain... Its not excruciating but it might hinder me from using heavier weights while declining if I dont take care of this. Any idea what it might be?? I do work in a sit-down job and also just got done doing 20 minutes on the elliptical machine if that has anything to do with it. I can still kind of feel it as Im sitting here.

Maybe you're over working yourself? the slightest wrong movement could cause things... it really terrifies me how fragile we really can be.

You should see a doctor. Sounds like a muscle strain but you don't mess around with those when they're near your spine.

Ugh. I hurt my back deadlifting with poor form late in a session -- bulging disc. It required a chiro to put it back in place before I could stand up straight... and then it was about 3 months of constant pain. Not fun... kept me out of the gym for a year and I got fatter. The first time I injured it there was no pop or instant pain. It started off nagging and then got worse over 2 days to the point where I couldn't stand up. See a doc, get it attended to right away, whatever it is. Back injuries are nothing to mess with if it feels like something is out of place and it isn't a muscle strain.

Yeah, it's probably a muscle strain but if it doesn't start to feel better soon you may want to see a doctor, as it could be a slipped/bulging disc.

I have been dealing with lower back pain for the past year. This shooting pain the goes from my lower back to my ass, really stings. It never went away, just gets better or worse, I've just kinda accepted. Back pain is tricky, it could be muscle stain (I think my is, because I could still lift heavy weights, just have to live with the pain) or a real disc prob. It's kinda funny thogh, most ppl I know what have disc problems don't even workout on regular basis, they heard it by lifting other objects. But def. strenghen your legs, if your lower body is strong , it will help you better support your spine. Also, when deadlifting, always remeber keep your back straight, head up (don't look down) and lift with your legs.

That is sciatica -- the large nerves going down both legs -- it is aggravated by a disc being out of place. A chiro really would do some good with that most likely. Find one that insists on x-rays first.

And yea on the deadlift -- my mistake all the way. I got a new belt and put it on for the last set. As I was going up I stupidly turned my head to the right to check my form in the mirror. That was it... no more deadlifting, ever, I think.

oh, thanks man, I never really suspected I might have a disc problem. I usually associate disc problem with severe pain. People I know that have disc problems describe the pain is so bad they can't even get off bed, let alone lift weights.

Yea, squats and deadlifts really are the most dangerous exercises ( but barbell shoulders press behind your neck is right up there) , if you don't watch your form and get greedy on weights that you can't really handle.

Did you warm up before you start lifting?
