Well, mostly since I don't have one. I own suits in most all colors, solids, pinstripes, checks, But not a single black suit, because I've always been told "Don't wear black suits"

Either way, I'm gonna supplement my wardrobe with at least one black suit, for just in case. (I have a couple of funerals coming up, due to very old and ill family members)

So here's my question: Would you go for a solid black suit, or a self-striped black suit? Kinda looks like a stronger type of herringbone, and also looks more solid from a distance.

Solid black suit. Great for evenings, dinners and cocktail parties. With a white shirt, dark pindot tie, looks very elegant.

For funerals, a plain charcoal suit will work just fine. I personally woulnd't go out of my way to buy a special suit just for a funeral unless I were an undertaker. If you do own a solid navy or charcoal, getting a black suit for a funeral just seems like a waste of money to me. As long as you look appropriately somber, no one is going to care what you are wearing.

Also, don't get self-stripe, especially if you do want the suit to be appropriate for a funeral.

Also, regarding the self-stripe suit, I have a self-stripe charcoal. I wish I never got this suit. I was admonished for wearing it in the "whnay's good taste" thread.

For a funeral?

I'd go for a solid -- herringbones/self-stripes mean you have to worry about other stripes clashing -- not a concern with plain weaves.

How brave of you to admit an intention to buy a black suit on this forum!

I think either a solid or a very subtle herrringbone would be fine. I'd avoid a tone-on-tone stripe. I have a solid black in the rotation along with all the blues an greys. So far, wearing it hasn't precipitated the apocalypse. But you never know...

Actually I have a pet hippo, but not a black suit. Thinking about it - a pet hippo is more versatile than a black suit...
