I'm looking to start a site with a clean, simple design to showcase creative projects.
Something like this
How much should one expect to pay to get something like that made? (I'm broke)
I am not sure why that site piques your interest, as someone who does development it loads incredibly slow(not just because of where it is hosted) and is somewhat awkward, but to directly answer your question you can do something similar to that on www.wix.com for free. If you are looking to pay someone you can go on www.elance.com and post your requirements.
Technologies you might want to ask for are Angularjs, or Isotope.metafizzy.
If you have some development skills and are just hosting static images and do not need any server side tech (looks like this site does not have any) you can can create an Amazon s3 bucket and serve the site from that. See http://aws.typepad.com/aws/2011/02/host-your-static-website-on-amazon-s3.html
what attracts me is how cleanly the collections are organized and how hovering over the links changes the background and the mood of the site.
Most website builders are filled with extra side bars and details that I don't need.
Thanks for those suggestions guys, anything more is greatly appreciated.
I'm guessing it isn't that simple either.
I emailed Squarespace on whether it's possible to change the background by hovering over a link (using their templates) and they said it'll require some custom HTML coding if it is.
I know no HTML so I'm still looking for a solution.
Yeah, but it's not my site. I only used it as an example of the layout and the background change that I wanted. If I get something made I wouldn't tell the guy "make sure to copy the crappy load times".
Use bigcartel or a similar service, and use either their free themes or buy a more fleshed out theme from a third provider. Bigcartel, uses paypal to process all payments of your website, and there is a free service or as low as 10$ per month.
