I need to get some new undershirts, and am hoping for some recommendations here. I'm after:

  • DEEP v-neck
  • Nice and long. I'm 5'10" and hate when they come untucked
  • Thin and light. Summer is coming
  • Inexpensive. Sorry, not ready to shell out for Zimmerli

Any ideas? The Target Merona V-Neck are long enough, relatively light, but the "V" is pretty high. I hate that.

I like vnecks as well because I cannot seem to get the collars white enough after a few wearings. I buy Kenneth cole vnecks, they hold up well.

Buy a larger size? My undershirts are a size above my normal shirt size, so the opening is nice and low.

Chorse, IIRC we are approximately same size and weight. Best fit so far for me is medium 2xist. GOod length and close to body. Not sure how deep you need them though. I have bought them from both Amazon.com (more expensive) and TJ Maxx, size seems similar.

Edit: I am talking about vests aka A-shirts (sleeveless kind).

I am about 5'10 and i cannot find a tshirt to fit. I bought CK size XL which swallowed me and then proceeded to shrink upwards to about my waist. Tried the CK size L, and it cut off circulation.

Right now I am wearing Polo, but am not happy about it.

I have a few Polo... quality is so-so and they shrunk. Not sure what line they were.

Brooks Brothers undershirts run about $15. They're not slim, but they meet the rest of your requirements, and I quite like the cotton, which doesn't seem to pill. Perhaps not thin enough for you, but YMMV. Worth a look-see anyway.

There's been some discussion about 2 grades of 2xist. The ones I have, which I got from STP, were crummy. The collared wonked out in a way that makes them borderline unwearable. The received wisdom the last time this came up is that the ones sold in single packets were supposedly better than the ones sold as triplets, but I've never attempted to confirm this. I'd stay away from the triplets, which I also found not long enough (I'm 5'11").

I've recently become addicted to Sak's house brand. Supima cotton v-necks for $9 each in packs of 3/$27. They wash well and are (from my experience) much nicer feeling and more durable than 2Xist.

+1 on the shortness of 2Xist. They always untuck and cause bousing in my shirt.

Nope, can't stand A-shirts. Need something to protect my actual shirts from unsightly stains.

Thanks, Grimslade. May try to run by 346 this weekend to take a look. Also will check out 2xist at FB/TJ Maxx.

Ah, very interesting. Will take a look. From the website, the v looks like it might be deep enough.

I just bought some of the Target Merona v-necks and agree that the V is way too high. I have started tucking my short undershirts into my underwear. It seems to work pretty well. I will have to go by Saks this weekend to try their v-necks.

Yeah, the v is almost non-existent on those Meronas. The collar shows with an open-necked shirt, even if you have only the top button undone. Defeats the main purpose of wearing a v-neck, imho. American Apparel is decent, although the v-necks are a bit harder to find cheap than the crews (since those get wholesaled out for printed t's). I've also found 2(x)ist v-necks to be pretty good, and the v is a decent size.
Conventional wisdom is that neither holds up that well after repeated washings, but that's never bothered me since I tend to treat undershirts as a cheap, regularly-replaced staple rather than a premium items.

JC Penney! I am 5'11 and have the same problem. They fit great and are inexpensive.

I really really like Nordstrom's house brand crewnecks--nice cotton, long enough for me (also 5'10"), good fit but not restrictive. I've considered their vnecks (opening looks reasonable), but I haven't bought any yet myself. They'll go on sale in the summer, come anniversary sale time.

I've sworn off Merona, because the quality and fit have been very variable from package to package.

Avoid all Hanes lines--Though I have a bunch of their crewnecks from the "classic" line that are great, I've yet to buy a Hanes vneck that holds its shape.
