Best Suit Maker in Texas? (Houston/Austin/Dallas/SA)

Just wondering if theres an updated consensus on which tailor is the "best" currently.

Looking to get my first "real" suit.

I fully recommend Chris Despos, who splits his time between Chicago and Dallas.

 Just looked into Chris, definitely interested.. he has no website huh?

I am located in Houston but will be travelling to Dallas in March.. Hopefully I can catch him then.

Nick Lopez in Houston is supposed to be pretty good. There was a another forum member who got a suit made from him. I can't remember who it was ATM.

If this is your first "real" suit, I wouldn't recommend looking for the "best" tailor. Start with nice, off the rack suits to see what you like and don't like. Although great tailors like Despos would lead you in the right direction, taking an expensive plunge like that coming from not owning any "real" suits is not the best idea. However, if you are looking for the best, I believe Despos still visits Dallas.

Agreed, he is a fantastic tailor but he has been semi retired for a while and has decided to close up shop soon. He's one of my very best friends, he gave me work when I was first getting started and taught me a lot.

Nick Lopez in Houston looks like he has done good work, and has a good rep in town. VintageGent had a suit or two made by him, I think he ended up preferring Chan.

If Despos does Dallas.. I've only seen great work from him. It feels weird commenting on that since, you know, he's in the thread.

As a member of the trade.
we appreciate the people who are excellent at our trade
and share knowledge and tips gleaned over many years of experience.
I learned about pattern making by watching Mark Sahamanian, of paris shirt.
as opinionated as I might be, You will never hear a negative word about his skills.
I never look to take business from people in the trade that I like and respect.

there are several Vietnamese tailors in both Houston and dallas making suits.
Saigon tailors, and Bond clothiers are both in Houston.

I can not comment on quality, as I have not seen their work in years.

Rex Furr is in Dallas.

I never had a suit made by Nick Lopez Tailoring but I did have many pieces altered at his shop. His team was definitely worth the added expense.

 

Nick is usually found upstairs (where he measures clients, has his fabric books, and constructs the pieces), but his cutting table is located on the first floor. He's always been very friendly and approachable so engaging with him about his craft won't be a problem (in the sense of wanting to get a feel for the tailor, his style, philosophy, personality, etc. prior to committing a purchase).

 

I'm still pretty new to the world of suiting so haven't made it to the bespoke level just yet. Even though I recently re-located away from Houston, I still think that Nick Lopez might be my first bespoke tailor. He occasionally travels outside of Houston (Austin, Washington DC) as he does a lot of suits for Texas politicians.

If you travel back and forth to Texas, that's fine. However, your choices for a quality tailor are greater in DC. Besides, who wants to look like a Texas politician? biggrin.gif William Field and his father made suits for politicians when politicians knew how to dress....

When I still lived in Houston (2008) I used Saigon Tailors for Alterations and was pleased with the results. Have never used their shirt business though.
