Mmm... I was thinking the same thing, though I really doubt Chippewa developed new lasts for the heritage line's Service and Homestead boots. I'm guessing (and it's merely a guess), that they're the same shape/construction as their basic boots with better leathers/eyelets/laces and the new 1901 stamp. Like you, I want to see them in person...

Kopped some more of the new line from Zappos and took delivery today. After a bunch of measuring vs Red Wing Heritage and Aldens, I maintain that these run TTS. Here are pics of a pair of "Tan Renegade" Service Boots and "Sundance Riptide" Homestead Boots. BTW these leather names are getting as absurd as paint swatch names. Anyway, click the thumbnails for high-res shots.

Do any of these new styles have gusseted tongues? It's hard to tell from the pics.

bl@ster question for you.... you say these fit TTS, .5 or 1 full size bigger than your RW boots.... I see conflicting info for sizing down... I wear an 11 in RW boots, wondering if I should go 11.5 or 12.

Any idea how close the color of those tan ones is to Red Wing's chestnut? I've wanted to get the Red Wing Beckmans in Chestnut (9013), but I think I'll be able to get these soon at a steep discount, through a family member. Looking for some lighter boots to accompany my brown Wolverine 1K's and my (Chippewa) LL Bean Katahdins. Wolverine's tan leather is just too yellow for my taste, but I love the orange quality to Red Wing's chestnut leather.

When did I say they ran a full size larger than RW boots? Anyway, the sizing is tricky. Not all Red Wing heritage boots fit the same (ie. I'd argue that 875's run TTS whereas most other boots in the heritage line run .5 size large like the plain toe Beckmans for example). In general if you wear an 11 in RW Heritage I'd order an 11.5 in Chippewa Original but if you tell me which RW's you wear an 11 in, I could help you better.

They're kinda close but the Chippewa Tan Renegade is a touch darker and more brown whereas the RW Chestnut is a bit lighter and a little more orange.

Here's a pic of the two, Chippewa Tan Renegade on the left and RW Chestnut on the right:

One important point, the Tan Renegade here in the daylight looking completely different from my earlier photos under a bright light at night illustrate the difficulty of color correction and true color on a computer monitor. The only real way to judge the color is in person :)

Apparently I type like a marsupialed person while at work - sorry.

I meant, in my understanding wiht RW boots, you size down .5 - 1 size compared to your TTS, in my case I am generally an 11.5/12 depending, but I wear an 11 RW.

I have the RW Heritage 8196 Round Toe in 11 D.

Cheers and thanks for all your help!

From looking over a bunch of Chipp boots (Katahdin, GQ, this new line, J Crew collabs from last year, logger boots, etc) I think you're right. I have little doubt that they're the exact same lasts. So if you wear size X in Katahdins, you'll wear that same size in Homestead boots. If you wear size X in the GQ boots, you'll wear that same size in the service boots. Etc etc.

For Red Wing Heritage boots, my general rule is to size down a half size or in rare instances stay TTS. I've found that the vast majority of RW stuff is .5 large except the moc-toe stuff. The only example I've found where you can argue that RW's run a full size large is Iron Rangers.

If you wear an 11D in the RW 8196, order a 11.5D in the Chippewa Original stuff. I just took an insole which I use to measure *INSIDE* the boot (which is obviously much more reliable than measuring the outsole because of welt characteristics) on both my RW 8196 and the Chippewa Service and Homesteads to verify that what I'm telling you is legit and not just a "feeling I have."

But in the end, order 2 sizes and try them both on. Return the one that doesn't fit as well.

Do these all have the same style rolled top like the LLBean model? I bought a pair of those and they were nice but that rolled top VS the cut top on Wolverines was super uncomfortable for me.

They are half-gusseted.

Thanks. I have the GQ boots that are also half-gusseted and didn't want to give up that feature. It's a shame none of the service boots have any lace hooks, but they still look great.

Just curious on your opinion: The Sundance Riptide (agreed, a horrible name...) looks almost reddish or burgundy on the zappo's site, and more orange-ish brown here. How would you describe the color?

Thanks.

FYI: I had a pair of pre-Katahdin Chippewa "engineer boots" (very similar to the Homestead) that I word for over ten years. Great boots! Nothing at all fancy, and as Blaster notes no support inside at all, but with a pair of Powerstep inserts they were perfect. The leather darkened and softened and really look great after about 5 years, just the point at which most boots would give, but they lasted several more years until finally beginning to split. And a great old-fashioned no-nonsense aesthetic, like these new ones.
