The case for black dress shirts?

I think black shirts work for streetwear. Rolled up with textured pieces, especially denim. I've tried making it work with more formal things but I think it's basically impossible. Only halfway acceptable attempt was with cream denim and mid gray blazer for a casual night out type look.

It looks like most here can't and some are brainwashed. When and where is answered above. Another place is funerals. The right purple tie in the first picture would work. Black shirts don't have much value. Clothes not only should fit body, but also the personality that is wearing the garments, that includes all clothes. Purpose and place has value. Suit and tie, who can argue until you see somebody swimming in it, then it doesn't fit the purpose and place, nor the swimming suit in the boardroom. Black shirts can have a place like any other garment, and like all garments not everywhere.

Funerals are bad places for black shirts.

Also lots of even casual night out outfits where one might consider a black shirt might be better served by gray or burgundy.

Black shirts are fine for streetwear and more casual looks (ones that do not involve ties), though I do think that a dark navy probably would work better in a lot of cases. Mariota looks terrible because he's trying to wear the shirt in a formal context with an absolutely awful tie. He's probably look better with a button undone and no tie, but still wouldn't look great.

All that said, the guy just won the biggest award in college sports and he's a young kid. He has plenty of time and future earnings to use to up his game in the clothing department if he is so inclined and can probably get away with being badly dressed in any event.

While it is an odd choice from a sartorial pov, I believe Mariotta's tie is a pattern to honor his Polynesian heritage.

A few things about black shirts:

1) Black is not the best color choice for most skin complexions

2) Black shirting is prone to fading and iron shine so it should be dry cleaned and ironed with a pressing cloth. A costly proposition.

3) Hard to incorporate into a suit and tie outfit without looking like an aspiring hipster or gangster wannabe.

If he had wanted to honor his Polynesian heritage, maybe he could have worn a lava lava. It would have been outrageous but at least sartorially consistent.

Were I so fortunate as to ever win an award, especially one of the distinction of the Heissman Trophy, I would not have come clomping up to the podium in wooden shoes to honor my Dutch heritage, nor would I wear a war bonnet to honor my Native American heritage. (I am half Dutch, but only a small fraction Native American.)
