What's the longest you've gone between buying an item and wearing it?

I got a silk jacket for a steal, fit me very well, but I hadn't a clue what I would wear it for. I wore it to a dinner party at a friend's house recently and I just remembered it had been unworn in my cupboard for three years. There must be other stuff that has yet to make it into the rotation yet or was bought for an occasion that has yet to occur - is this aberrant among SF regulars or a regular occurrence?

3 years and counting.

My heavy duty CG parka is going on 10 years with only 4 wearings in that time.

something like 60% of clothes that are purchased on impulse never get worn. I believe the females have an even more dramatic statistic.

Something like this. I bought a jacket on impulse and didn't wear it for a long while. When I was going to wear it I noticed a small hole in the back and by then so much time had passed that I couldn't possibly get a refund.

So, if things like that count it's almost a year now. I'll never wear it, unless I can make it a part of an outfit for a masquerade or something ;)

Several months: I bought an evening dress from Gordon Yao in Hong Kong in spring in preparation for the next winter's black tie functions.

Good topic. I have a few items I have "saved" for a special occasion, and of course, that occasion never comes along. My wife gave me an athletic top 20 yrs ago that I have never worn, always the wrong colors for any team I've been on, but cool as a stand alone piece. But I'm sure that sometime soon, the perfect occasion will come along ...

Bump for a good topic.

In some cases, is fit the reason the items remain never worn, or are those items gotten rid of quickly?

For me, it's often about liking the item, but not how it would fit within your wardrobe. For example I got a great pair of tweed trousers, but ultimately it took about 7 or 8 months before I could work out how to wear them and not look like I was in costume.

Same for me as for Blackhood. I have a great piece and I got it for a great price. I could resell it for break even, but I would have a tough time replicating the piece in the future. So I am hesitant to sell it, but I also am not convinced that the piece fits into my lifestyle very well.

I'm going on 6 months for a suit i bought that required some tailoring. Been too lazy to go to the tailor. Schlepping suits into the city is a pain.

I bought a red striped seersucker suit once in late September. I waited until the following May to wear it.

Ralph Lauren Purple Label Suit...brand new with tags and baste stitching still intact. 11+ years and counting. I really should sell it.
