Holes in Crotch of Howard Yount Pants: Anyone Else Have the Same Problem?

I bought a few pairs of Howard Yount pants a few months ago, and have been wearing one of the three regularly. The others I've worn a few times each, just because they're a bit too slim for me right now.

 

I had the pair that I've worn probably 20-ish times on the back of a chair in my office, and just walked in a minute ago and noticed that there's a large hole in the crotch. That made me a bit curious, and I checked the crotch of another pair that I've worn no more than five times. It's pilling like crazy and is about to wear through. I've uploaded some pictures below. The first two are of a pair of charcoal flannels (made in USA); the second is a brushed twill (made in Italy).

 

I was extremely impressed and happy with the quality of the pants, but now I'm just wondering what's happened. Is it possible that my 40R (standard drop frame) is a pants-killer?

 

Has anyone else experienced this or similar issues? I'm wondering what I should do.

No ideas about the piling, but the holes look like the work of moths.

Crotch blowouts are inevitable if you're a desk jockey. It doesn't matter how cheap or expensive the pants are. The only solution is to buy more trousers so you wear each pair less often.

Agreed.

It happens more frequently if you have larger thighs, whether due to cycling/weights/fat.

It also happens more easily if the trousers are made from a softer fabric -such as flannel - or from one with texture, as he fibres rub against each other more.

Trousers made with smoother fabric will generally take longer to develop holes in the crotch.

That's very disappointing. No pants should wear out that quickly, assuming they fit correctly. Since the seams still appear to be tight, my first thought was that they appear damaged. As if they were punctured on something. Stupid question, but have you checked the obvious (car seat, chair at work, etc)?

I own 8 pairs of HY, in various fabrics (flannel, summer nailhead, four season). I have never had any such problem.

I wear through my pants in the crotch as well. but usually closer to the seam
flannels go much faster then hard finished fabrics.
when you have your tailor hem your pants, ask for the fabric that has been cut from the bottom.
save that so the tailor can put in a crotch piece.

the pants are not defective.

Flannel wear through very quickly compare to worsted. Reinforce the thinning spots before its gone.

These trousers are obviously poor quality. Choose a better manufacturer the next time.

Generally piling and wear in the crotch is caused by heavy thighs. Have your tailor make a crotch lining for your trousers and that will slow down the wear.

The holes in the pictures look like the work of moths

Not so - see the posts above.

It's not the quality of the trousers, it's the type of fabric and the build of the person wearing them. I've had Borrelli and good quality MTO trousers with the same issue, simply because I have large thighs (lots of cycling when young, followed by middle-aged weight gain), the fabric was soft, and I wore them a lot because they were so comfortable.

Note to the OP: As shirtmaven pointed out, if you can get the same or very similar cloth, they can be patched by cutting out a "v" shape on either side of the crotch seam of the trousers, including the worn area, and sewing in replacement pieces.

I've experienced the same pilling in the crotch on Howard Yount brushed flannel pants and they're not tight.
