Loro Piana and Zegna Cashmere jacketing fabric

Can anyone with experience of Loro Piana and/or Zegna Cashmere jacketing fabrics comment on:

- durability
- quality
- ease of tailoring
- value for money

Also, is one necessarily better than the other? I am thinking of commissioning a sports coat (either 100% cashmere or a cashmere/silk blend) and just don't know enough about these fabrics to feel safe taking the plunge. I also couldn't seem to find anything on the threads either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have jackets in both, in terms of durability I have had no issues, I think the oldest jacket 4-5 years old and its pure cashmere. And I wear my clothing, I don't baby it. In terms of value, its all subjective. With LP and Zegna, you are paying a premium for the name but I have found that the patterns that they both do are hard to replicate elsewhere. Zegna has great plaids/checks and LP does beautiful color combinations which you are not going to find elsewhere. Holland and Sherry is about as close as you are going to get with Zegna/LP in terms of styles, finish and variety.

Have a look at the Harrisons Saltire book; its 100 percent cashmere and they have some beautifull designs in it.I dont know how much it retails for but I get it for a reasonable price and its quite ok.

Each one has several different bunches that cover the spectrum of cashmere grades. The top coat cashmeres are durable in general in both but If you are looking for the finest softest cashmere jacketing with a little less durability then look at "BEST" from zegna which If memory serves me is 10 oz. however Loro Piana, Zegna, H&S, are all quality suppliers and you won,t go wrong choosing any of these. Basically go with the one you fall in love with. Also have a look at Guabello which have some beautiful options.

I believe Ed Morel is experienced with both fabrics (and many more) hence you can take his advice.

LP fabrics aren't well known for their value for money. Their top of the range can be very good however at exorbitant price.
I've hold LP cashmere before and my understanding is that if you're looking for light weight and luxurious fabrics then they may be good yet at the expense of the durability. As for the ease of tailoring, that will depend on your tailor.

Generally speaking, a 100% cashmere jacket can be quite fragile especially for daily wear. Exception if you're going for the very best (expect to pay premium) and you will need to understand the characteristics of the cashmere (don't just believe the marketing gimmick).

Have limited experience with Zegna fabrics hence can't really provide a reliable feedback.

No LP but I have 2 jackets made from Zegna fabric - One summer weight (linen-silk-cotten) and one pure cashmere. I've had the summer weight for 3 years with a fair amount of wear and it holds up great. Cashmere jacket feels like a fluffy pillow but seems to wear as well as other fine wool jackets I have (only had it one year though)
