Jean purchase advice/suggestions needed

I went back 6 or 7 pages but didn't see anything current for this. I'd like to start gathering some intel...and I know next nothing about denim. I need something that can accommodate my size 39/40 waist, but not look like a dad jean. I have a couple pairs on Polo Ralph Lauren slim fits which look good. I'd prefer not to pay the money for some mass marketed "premium" brand. Looking good quality and would prefer US made.

but off the top of my head APCs in a 38 would probably stretch if American made isn't your primary concern, Jeanshop in a 38 if you want American denim and don't mind the prices.
