I would not do it. Best results = experienced professional who can see straight on your hair. Anything else will be at best a crude approximation. Anyhow, depends on how finicky you are...

Hmm... best bet IMHO would be to explain clearly what you want, show pictures. See if you can locate a salon or barbershop that does such cuts or more "modern" cuts, that makes a serious difference.

Yeah... thinned down hair, sort of longer, some "goopy" product like Bedhead Manipulator or maybe that American Crew Fiber stuff... you do not want anything too stiffening.
Of course the results and how it will be treated depends on what sort of hair you have. I am not a hairstylist (and do not play one on television dramas/infomercials) so cannot really offer much more...

now when i look at the rest of his pics. I like the look from straight on from the front but not really the sides. i want more of a spikey messy look behind the front spikes isntead of it combed forward.

You've got the typical asian guy hair; I had the same problem until I started going to a salon, using decent shampoo/conditioner, and using decent hair product.

At the salon, my hairdresser uses a razor to texturize the hair making it uneven, to make it more easy to get the 'bed head' look.

I am using a hair softening shampoo (from Joico, i think?) and American Crew Conditioner, both marketed for men (whether there is a difference, i dunno. perhaps just the scent).

Lastly, get some decent hair product. I've used Sebastian's Xtah Crude Clay, which works really well but is a ***** to wash out. I currently use this clay stuff by some company called Giesel; holds better, smells better, looks better and washes out easier than Crude Clay. American Crew Fibre is fairly decent as well, and is easier to find than Crude Clay or this Giesel stuff.

edit. that cut is very easy to get just grow it out long enough step up your product game and go to a mid level salon $25-$30 and they should be able to do it

Using a flatiron would make it pretty easy to get this look. It works wonders on my hair, although I'm too lazy to use it all the time.
