can anybody please recommend a specific backpack that would be good for holding gymwear, shoes, and some toiletries that would also be comfortable and have enough support that i could run home with my work clothes and possibly a small laptop after my workout? man, that's a long sentence. thanks.

Vaude and Asics both make backpacks specifically for running.

You want a lightweight or ultralight one with compression straps and probably a chest strap (I think a waist strap is overkill for this size, but maybe it keeps it from bouncing). Back ventilation and hookup for a hydration bag are really nice features, as well. I'd just go to MEC or REI or whatever and buy a house brand activity bag in the volume you need.

Anyone have any direct links? Also would these be versatile for some biking?

For example: MEC's 19L/1kg H2Yo Hydration Pack for CA$47, Gregory's 20L/700g Iso Pack for CA$83, GoLite's 15L/600g Rush Pack for US$70. (My size 12 shoes take up a lot of space, so you might not need 20L. ) Anything made for trail running should have all the features, so only price and weight differentiate them. Don't pay retail for a brand-name hydration system unless it comes bundled with the pack. Personally, I wouldn't even cycle around the block without panniers: having your back bare and your centre of gravity low is very nice.
