Suit jacket length vs sleeve length

Hey everyone,

I bought a suit a while ago that was 38R. I usually buy a 38S. I brought it in to my tailor and he made it fit nicely, except the sleeve length was still a little too long for my taste. The sleeve was at the end of my thumb and I always thought it should be at  wrist level. The tailor had already brought up the sleeve a bit at the shoulder and I think he had already brought it up a bit at the end of the sleeve.

I asked him if could bring up the sleeve another inch. He said if I did that, the jacket would be too long compared to the sleeve length. He said that if I wanted to bring the sleeve up another inch, so that my shirt cuff will show, that I should also bring up the jacket an inch or two. Otherwise the sleeve length would look weird compared to the jacket length.

I decided to trust him but I also want to check in with you guys to see what styleforum thinks. Can a suit jacket be too long just based on sleeve length? The jacket wasn't THAT long anyway. It went to around the middle of my thigh. Also, does shortening the jacket by an inch or two ruin the look of a jacket? Will it look disproportionate?

Thanks for any insight.

Shortening a jacket can be a risky and expensive proposition. Just get the sleeves where you want them and make the decision then. You can post pictures on the Tailor's feedback thread.
