I love it when I quote me. Tis done. Was a bunch of fun. Went to some steel dude, bought about 16 meters of L shaped steel, chopped into lengths. Cost - $25 Took it to some streetside welder dude who normally repairs holes in motorbike mufflers. Took some convincing, but he agreed to make it and paint it. Cost $12. Done! Painting needs a little touch up from the transporting, and need some slats made up (bought the wood already...eight whole dollars there) and we are there. I love this place sometimes.

I like how you just go out and, GET IT DONE!

Now all you have to do is figure out how to make the bed so it breaks down and ships in a flat box.

I recently converted an antique iron bed to a platform bed.
The materials alone, excluding the bed, USD 100 +

It came out okay.

The bed was made for steel, spring loaded staps that supported some kind of mattress.

The bed unit, as a whole, was not exactly rock solid.

It's a simple iron, kind of French looking, bed frame.

By converting it to a platform, the bed doesn't look any different, but it's now ridgid.

I have a foam mattress on it.

It looks pretty much original as it would have in it's original configuration.

I saw a site recently with a similar bed. I think it's the same company.
They've been making them for a hundred years.

What do you guys thinks of the contemporary furniture on these two websites? They are basically the same, but one is for USA and the other is for Canada. They seem to be adding a lot more contemporary furniture to their websites. I personally like the new styles they have been adding.

What are people's thoughts on Design Within Reach?

DWR is mainstream and pretty safe, if not exciting. Their classic pieces (like the Eames stuff) is good, but some of their other things are questionable. It's like a Nordstrom in a large city that might carry Zegna and other highish-end menswear brands (relative to nomal standards, not SF standards), or perhaps a Saks in a small town.

If you can find a local retailer that you can get to know over time, that's probably a better bet as they can steer you towards or away from certain pieces after getting to know you better.

Keep an eye out for their sales and promotions. You can save 10-20% or shipping.

DWR tends to get high marks for customer service, but panned for their prices, particularly their shipping fees. DWR carries all of the iconic pieces, so I think it's a great introduction to mid-century modern design. For more esoteric or unique furniture, you're going to have to find other avenues.
