The second it stops looking shiny it will start looking dated.

it's on the corner of robertson and olympic in beverly hills. across the street from charles the tailor.

it is gherish. that's why i mentioned it reminds me of the disney music hall, which he designed.

It has the vulgar aspects of those who try to appear avant-garde but who don't know how to incorporate avant-garde into the urban landscape, thus leading to kitsch. But I suppose it's better than the faux-Tuscan lube places.

It looks kinda cool, IMO.

Was there a reason given for the design or was it just for the sake of making it look different? I don't see how it makes the gas buying experience any more exciting or fullfilling.

It's just a pleasant way of saying "Thanks for being addicted to our product, America."

from the l.a. times:

The nation's first certifiably green gasoline station sports a futuristic metal canopy covered in shiny triangles of uncoated, recyclable stainless steel.

The rooftop holds 90 solar panels and a collection system that gathers rainfall to irrigate drought-tolerant plants nearby. The underside is outfitted with low-energy lighting. Cars will roll across concrete mixed with bits of recycled glass...

Dubbed Helios House by BP, the eco-friendly station at the corner of Robertson and Olympic boulevards replaces a slightly run-down Thrifty station that served customers from Los Angeles and nearby Beverly Hills. The new gas station was built with cutting-edge earth-friendly design, using such materials as farmed wood and less-polluting paint, and its customers will be pushed to save energy.

Members of the station's "green team" will check the tire pressure on customers' cars and advise that properly inflated tires boost gas mileage. They will give out energy-saving tips, printed on recycled paper embedded with flower seeds that sprout when the card is planted in the ground.

While its customers pump gas -- a three-minute task, on average -- BP will show eco-vignettes and green videos on screens built into the fuel dispensers.

It's great and all that the building is eco friendly but they must realize that people are going there to fill up their gas guzzling exotics and suv's. I'm glad there is a point to the architecture but I would be much more impressed if the "magic building" increased my MPG.

I ride my bicycle past that station all the time. Those "a little better" signs during construction had me guessing for a long time.

Hah, I forgot we're neighbors. I drive past that station all the time. It's kind of garish, but all else being the same it beats having standard gas station there. Architecturally, I prefer the 76 station at SMB and Crescent:

vast improvement over what I get to look at.
I appreciate the lack of signage.

There's signage at ground level.
