Graduation attire

Thread Starter
I will be graduating from college in less then two weeks, and an uncle of mine was curious as to the dress code of the graduation ceremony. I will be wearing a suit (in addition to my cap and gown), and my father will be wearing a suit as well. I was thinking I would like to have him wear a suit as well, but I know that the town I am in is super casual (we are talking about Oregon here). I thought about telling him to wear slacks and a sportcoat with a button down shirt. However, I am thinking that a full suit and tie is more appropriate; besides, if it happens that he is overdressed, he can always take off the coat. What do you guys think? Thanks for your help. First of all, congratulations on your accomplishment.  I am assuming that you are wearing a cap and gown.  If that is the case, I would recommend against wearing a jacket under the gown.  Those things trap heat like very few things in the world.  I suggest that you give your jacket to your dad for safe keeping and retrieve it when you remove the gown.  Since the jacket will not be seen with the gown on, go for comfort.  As for your uncle, a suit is without question appropriate for the occasion, but you will be surprised in the variety of dress that you will see.

Congratulations Pink: I graduated from the University of Washington in 1992, and again in 1999. I'd second the recomendation to forsake the suit jacket for the graduate. The only part that shows under the gown is the necktie knot, the collar, the trousers below the knee and the shoes. I can't think of a better occasion for those attending a graduation to wear a suit, but your uncle shouldn't feel pressure to wear one. There were people in the audience wearing oxford shirts and chinos at both of my graduations. Bic

Philistines. My sister's HS graduation was 2 weeks ago and I wore a wonderful Zegna Napoli Couture suit and several people told me how good I looked. But, yes underneath the gown, no one will see anything; of course you will eventually take the gown off... Jon.
