Could make for some neat nightstands. It's hard to tell what they'd look like in person, or when they're not lit-up...

Still haven't found the perfect bed yet. And am still enterntainign the canopy bed idea.

The only problem with that one is that my mattress is significantly thicker, at about 16" i think. I think it would hide the back piece of ebony. While not the end of the world, it isn't ideal. I want to do something significantly different from the living/dining room, which is all contemporary italian dark wood and leather. My sheets, which I'm not planning on replacing are pure white so I'm looking for something very serene and zen-like.

My tiny brain keeps chirping "gelatinous cube"!

A bit too trendy nightclub for me.

They look like something you might find in a hip Shanghai nightclub.

Ya... I just got a top-end beautyrest. It's incredibly comfortable but I completely understand what you're saying. It's put a limit on my bed options because all the italian beds are super-low profile.

I think that you would be better off with these: which also work on the floor

The DWR lamps are sort of along the lines of the iconic Jack lamp designed by Tom Dixon:

I have his Melon lamp from the same series, and it gives off a very nice ambient light. I prefer it over the Jack because it seems less cartoony:

We have some of his mirror balls which are also awesome.

I like the DWR box lights stacked and slightly askew, but that may be OTT.

There's so much cool stuff that I want on all these design sites... I find the name design within reach slightly ironic though, as some of the lamps on their site are 2.5k...

This was my first thought. I've come to really appreciate the thinner Euro style mattresses. You're going to have trouble finding a "zen" bed that can maintain it's balance with a honking mattress. That said, Nantucket Red has a bed that may suit your needs. It's somewhere in this thread...

For the most part, the stuff on DWR is still pretty reasonable. They have really upped their quality level over the last few years, but you will not find much cutting edge stuff on there because it is a stock business. Most of the really high end stuff that you see at specialist shops are more expensive with more interesting materials, but not necessarily better designed or better made. For cutting edge stuff, DWR kind of stinks, but for the classic modern look they are very good.

I'm gonna need something with a pretty high headboard. There's a decent looking bed with attached night-stands in a wenge finish at a store near me that would work, but i'm not really sold on it.

Amazingly, the type of bed I would ultimately get wasn't even a consideration when I was shopping for a mattress. I just wanted the most comfortable mattress I could find, and it happened to be 16" thick. Now I'm "stuck" with it. :P

edit: lol this is funny: http://www.europebynet.com/Detail_nn...EBED007-1.html

A wonderful bed designed by Mauro Bertame' along Feng Shui principles. The base of the bed is very low (Feng Shui recommendation); and the canopy has soft round contours providing a warm embrace. It is covered in a special textile which mitigates the damaging effects of electromagnetic fields.

Some of those old-school '50s metal lamps can look nice.
