So, I blundered across the Library Designs website just now. I've been searching for a site like this, as I've always wanted a "traditionally English-styled" library with wingback chairs in front of a fireplace, a large desk in front of a window, and a little table with a decanter of fine Scotch and a couple of glasses (in case I want a drink or have company). Does anyone have a personal library of this caliber? Does anyone want to talk about personal libraries of this caliber? I get the feeling that they're being discarded in favor of the Internet (!?!?!?!?!?????!) or public libraries. Frankly, I'd almost say I'm most comfortable when surrounded by books. Bibliophiles unite! Or something...

I have a library. It is not of that caliber, but I love words and enjoy books. It is on the second floor and has a good view from the desk. Two of the three walls are books now, and the other shortly will be. And I am working on upgrading the furnishings. I like the Scotch idea, though I do have a full bar....

No library yet. Here's a room with bookcases, maybe not a library per se, which I think looks great. From the New York Times

Oh, I think that's quite nice. I want one a bit larger, of course, with a desk and bar, but that is a nice reading nook.

Of course, I consider the television on the shelf a complete abomination! One could fit a few more books there and toss that menagerie of glass, metal, and plastic into the nearest recycle bin! I'll bet the owner of that nook wears white before Memorial Day, too! Hrmph!

Books are for fag Edit: On a serious note, does anyone buy the fancy classic literature books bound in leather with the gold template? I like the idea, but unfortunately they don't update them with the most current translation for foreign authors.

I buy old books rather than fancy books. "The most current translations," may also suck -- get the best and then you don't need to update! Regards, Huntsman

I'm glad you added "on a serious note"; otherwise, I would have discounted your entire post.

"For fag" is a...how shall we say...plebian phrase? You're a Texan, good man! Act like one!

And, yes; most current translations can be crap. Also, older translations can be more stillted. Find one that conveys the ideas. The language doesn't matter if the ideas themselves are transferred from author to reader intact.
