How to start a company LLC?

Hi there, 

 I searched through the forums and didn't really see a path so I'll start here. 

 

How do you start a company in the state of New York? How much is it? Do you have to have a product or service firmly in place or can one just start a company, just to hold it ( and self appoint yourself as CEO? ) 

 

Any insight, greatly appreciated!

Do it yourself.
All you usually need r charter, describing ownership shares within the Co. and standard application. Last time I incorporated it cost me 80 dollars. You don't need to feed lawyers for that.

+1, talking to a professional is always the best bet. At the very least use Legalzoom to walk you through it.

Do it yourself, but keep in mind that each state will have different requirements. Some with require a dba while others will not, some will require an annual 'business report' while others will not....just do some research, fill out the proper forms, get you ID number from the federal government, etc.  Good luck!

Lawyer up. Example: I had a contract template I was using, and had a nice long talking-to by my lawyer before he rewrote the entire thing. They are experienced in what can go wrong and can save your ass.
