It sounds like a woman's sweater

Its just the fit, some cardigans are longer, certain styles are shorter. I wouldnt worry about it, unless it bothers you, then return it.

But pics will help determine if it looks alright or not

That sounds like it fits perfect. I like sweaters to sit at the belt. Maybe even showing some of the belt.

Cardigans come in different lengths. It's a matter of personal preference.

I prefer this length. Some prefer cardigans shorter.

 

Your pic is more or less how I like cardigans to fit too. Which is fortunate, since I'm a shorter guy and lots of cardigans naturally fall to that length on me anyway.

 

The shorter style is somewhat more current however. As you say, there's a strong element of personal preference here. If the OP doesn't like the length of his new cardy, it's should be too difficult to source a longer cardigan from more traditional shops/makers. The trouble is that some of those are not just longer but also a bit baggier. It can be tricky to find a combination of a slim style and a slightly longer than currently popular length if you're not a bit shorter than average.
