It's a great looking car.

They have also just launched the new Spider. I would think if they are going to export anything to the US, it would be that.

Alfa Romeo was planning to return to the US sometime in the future, however I don't know the details. Apparently the pricing will be much higher than what their position used to be in the past. The pricing is similar to the price contingent formerly occupied by Lancia, but their marque doesn't have the stature of Lancia; but then neither does Lancia these days.

I think Alfa carries a certain amount of cachet in the US, especially with its long absence. Of course, I have no idea what Lancia used to go for, nor where Alfa is aiming. But I did see one of these in Innsbruck last week, and man is it a sexy station wagon. Tom

Yes, Alfa tends to have that foreign exotic appeal about it, but they're pricing it rather high for what their former market was, which was a value-priced roadster. They were not expensive cars in the postwar period. They're pricing it at a more premium level, similar to Lancia's former position. But then Lancia was always an odd position considering their high level of quality and status as Italy's premier marque and yet I believe their prices were about the same as Jaguar.

My Japanese lady friend mentioned that she met a rep from Alfa Romeo who told her that Alfa does not build cars; they build musical instruments.

There are lots of Alfas on the streets of Japan.

in truffaut's the man who loved women, the man who loved women drives an alfa. in bobby deerfield, a film about an american racecar driver in europe, bobby drives an alfa as his personal car. in godard's contempt, jack palance and brigitte bardot crash to their deaths in a red alfa. if you want a brera, you will likely be able to pick one up in mexico city, guadalajara, or monterrey. you can enjoy the drive home from there.

That would explain their build quality, or should I say lack thereof.

I don't know about the current crop of Alfas, but I think their poor quality is exaggerated. They're certainly not as well-built as the German cars or contemporary Lancias, but they seem better-built than many of the English cars.

Of course, these days, German cars aren't even built in Germany.

The engine is made in Hungary; everything else is German, including final assembly. Anyway, Hungary is still a lot better than buying a Chrysler...made in Mexico.
