Probably did affect it a bit. You retain a lot of water and it likely pools a bit in his feet, making them swell.

5'11" with a size 9.5D. Being a similar size to the original poster, I don't feel that longer toe shoes look bad at all but rather good. 9.5 is a perfect size to me because they aren't so small that my feet look tiny and aren't gargantuan either where shoes tend to look disproportionate. I think 9 tends to be close to the size that most shoemakers use when displaying their products as it's average. I do find however that some of my shoes, especially running shoes with a smaller toe box make my feet look smaller.
