Do these need to be worn with a suit or could they be worn for business casual with some quality dress pants and a dress shirt?

I don't think they are appropriate for the average work environment. I could see how they might look good with dressier jeans or odd pants for the weekend.

I'd wear them business casual, suit and jeans (not simultaneously of course

). Edit: Lawyerdad as usual is quicker than I to the draw.

I actually agree with Kasper on this one. I don't like that ridgeback with a suit. What the hell do I know though.

And I suppose 95% of the shoes that are actually worn in the work environment with a suit - big clunky, black, squared toe, rubber soled, kenneth cole-esque shoes - are appropriate?

The answer depends on whether you're comfortable wearing them and like the look. There is definitely nothing wrong about wearing them, even in a "conservative" environment, whatever that means.

BTW, i think those wholecuts would qualify as bals.
