Official Wedding Attire Question/Answer/Picture Thread - Page 32

Just when I thought I knew exactly what I was going to wear with my light navy blue Dormeuil suit, my bride had problems with a custom gown she was having made. Subsequently she had to change her dress, and now I'm sort of "up in the air" with what I should wear for my shirt and tie combo. Now her dress will be ivory, so I will be getting a cream shirt made, but I don't know what color tie would look best. I initially was going to go with a trad wedding tie (houndstooth, shepherds check, etc.) now, however, I'm thinking I need something different than a black and white tie.

Any advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I always like solid silver or gray.

Well thanks for your help everyone, this was the final outfit for the wedding last night. I don't want to come off as arrogant but I was definitely the most appropriate and sharpest dressed there last night! It definitely helped with the ladies lol.

Very slick. We should have a motto for SF: You're going to like the way you look, we guarantee it!

Looks snazzy man!

Also, in regards to the recent discussion regarding the Duke of Windsor. To my knowledge, he never wore a full windsor. None of the pictures posted are of him wearing a full windsor.

A FIH is always right, in my most humble of opinions. Looks more nonchalant and gentlemanly. Of course, everyone is free to wear what they wish. I am just saying, that most well-dressed men of the last 80-90 some odd years have predominantly tied their knots FIH. If you want a thicker knot, specify that you want thicker interlining or choose a tie with thicker silk.

I don't understand why your bride changing her dress should make a difference with respect to what you wear.

I agree with this. I would not go for a cream shirt. If anything, switch your shirt to a nice light blue. Maybe it is just me, but ecru / cream give me a huge color block.

Because a stark white shirt would clash with a cream dress in the photographs. Just like there are rules for business dressing, there are rules for weddings as well.

You Anti-Windsor Hysteria is getting tiresome. Please find a new cause that needs your attention. Honestly, do you walk up to men on the street with a Full Windsor and point and scream BLASPHEMY!!! HERESY!!!!!

Not quite--we can agree to disagree then, Mr. Daniels smile.gif. It shall be dropped!

For the love of god, can we please get off the banal knot topic?

Ok this is probably a really stupid question but is it appropriate to have myself and groomsmen dressed in dark navy for a wedding being held 50/50 outdoors in sunlight during mid-summer? I have this fear that darker colors will be out of place for the setting/time  (also in Australia so potentially facing 35-40 degree heat). Am i just going overboard here? My future bride wanted me to originally choose some kind of mid grey. I've never worn grey before but I'm a pretty hefty guy (6'2 110~kg) so i get the feeling that wouldn't be a particularly good look on me. Any ideas?

Also are there any 'wedding appropriate' ties that can make the transition to the work place? I have 2 ties from earlier weddings where I have been in the wedding party and both look truly awful in a regular setting. I dislike the idea of spending $500+ on ties that I know will likely never be worn again. Before reading this thread i was considering having some navy or burgundy grenadines done by Sam Hober but now I'm both unsure if it's appropriate and concerned what to give everyone else (since now i know the we shouldn't have matching ties).

Big question: Is it daytime or nighttime?

Oh i meant bit of both. Ceremony will start around 3 or 4pm and it gets dark around 730ish so there's going to be quit few daylight hours to fill in (and I assume the majority of photos will be during this time)

Man that heat sounds brutal. I recommend making the ceremony as fast as possible. Even if you think you'd look better in navy, you'll look worse soaked in sweat. I'd wear something you'll be more comfortable in and have at least one extra shirt for changing.

On ties, check out the wedding ties thread linked in the OP
