So far this thread has been fun. Am I being selfish for wishing there were more pictures?

Hi,

I'm wearing a top hat, morning coat (black), striped grey trousers with braces, a light blue shirt with white collar and cuffs, and ... a dove grey double breasted waistcoat.

I'm hoping for some thoughts on

Waistcoat

I'm having made a dove grey double breasted waistcoat. I can have a shawl or a peaked lapel. The tailor prefers peaked lapels, but has said i can have what I want.

This is a suit that I intend to last, and I was wondering what might be best to go for with that in mind? There is also the point that with the jacket on, you cannot see the the top third of the lapels.

Here are some examples

http://favourbrook.com/shop/product/Favourbrook-Gabardine-Wool-Waistcoat-Peak-Lapel-Grey-FBM17/

Winchester / Tunic Shirt

I am after a very light blue shirt, with white collars and cuffs. Ideally a detachable collar, but i'll settle for attached if i must.

The only place I could find one is Thomas Pink. All other blue Winchester or Tunic shirts are bengal stripe blue, which I don't think would look right.

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks very much

Peaked lapel for the waistcoat is better. I will eventually order one bespoke to upgrade my morning wear.

Are u only looking at RTW for shirt? It would be better if only the collar was white. If you go bespoke or MTM, check duck egg Blu end on end. I have one in mind from Grandi & Rubinelli that is almost white and would be perfect for a wedding

I'm grateful for this thread. I have a brother-in-law who's wedding is coming up this July and I've been trying to drop more and more breadcrumbs his way about rejecting his bride-to-be's impulse for neon and matchy-matchy. Wish me luck.

I decided to go with navy suits for the groomsmen (I'm going with a 3-piece). The wedding is small and there are only three groomsmen, so I'm buying them all wedding ties. However, now my bride is freaking out about the bridesmaids dresses not matching the navy. She says that there are no rules like there are for men, and that nothing works with navy. I don't think this is true, but I haven't been able to find any documentation regarding women's attire.

The wedding is at the end of August. Does anyone have any good articles for my bride that might help her with the selection and also calm her down?

With all possible respect to your bride, navy goes with everything. Mid-grey may be the only possible more "coordinative" color

I don't understand...she's worried that whatever the bridesmaids are wearing won't look good next to a navy suit? Navy is like THE classic color for a mens suit. If women didn't look good next to it this would have ceased to be the case long ago.

Yeah. I wasn't really sure what color to suggest. I suggested perhaps a black dresses, but she said that black is way too formal. I thought black dresses were okay. I just need some resources to help. Anyone have anything good?

Yeah... I seriously can't think of a shade on a women's dress, short of a different color navy, that would look bad next to a navy suit.

Black probably no good. Not really too formal (a wedding is supposed to be kinda formal anyway) just too funereal.

But I don't really know much about womenswear. What about champagne, silver, buff, and those kinds of colors?
Yeah, now that I think about it black is probably a bad choice.

I suppose I'll just have to scour the net for pictures.

Black is a color that evokes strong emotions on certain people, as it has on you and the other few vocal minority here on SF. If anyone wishes to do so, one can do a basic search on the Internet on what the color black represents. While black may be the color of mourning, it is also the color that represents formality and elegance. This is not just my opinion. This is not the opinion of a NOOB who does not know what he is talking about. There is an ongoing debate on a thread here on SF on the appropriateness of the black as a business suit. There were many seasoned posters here on SF who were against black for business, because black is too formal of a color to wear for business. More importantly, the consensus among experts who study the symbolism and psychology of colors, say that black is a formal color. Marketers know this and use black to market high end products. When you hear the term "black label", what do you think of?

Do not get wrong. I am not saying that black is the only appropriate color for a man for a wedding. Blue or charcoal grey is also appropriate. What I am saying, it is wrong to say that black is not a formal color and only appropriate for funerals. If a man chooses to wear black at a wedding it is not a fashion no-no. It is O.K.

Having said all of that, I will agree with you on this point. I do not think the bridesmaids, or any women for that matter should wear black at a wedding. Like I said before, while black is the color of formality it is also the color of mourning. There has to be the right balance. If men wear a dark suits and women wear black, then there is too much darkness. It will look like a funeral. Besides, black and navy blue do not go together. They are too similar in tones.

As for what the color for the bridesmaid's dresses. Askandy forum has a table that advises people bases on the color of your jacket, what color shirt, tie, shoes and pants to wear. Why not use that table and chose a color that they recommend for a tie, have the groomsmen wear that color tie, and bridesmaids can also wear the same color dresses. This could be a good compromise between women who want matching colors, without the men looking ridiculous. For instance lets say you chose burgundy (not that I am recommending any color), the men can either wear the same burgundy tie, or different burgundy ties, with the bridesmaids also wearing burgundy dresses.

Here is the askandy link. The last part does represent the opinion of a Noob. If anyone thinks it is ridiculous, fire away.
