Just received a package from US to UK with value of around $100 and was expecting a small amount of duties to pay.

There was no customs form attached to outside of box that I could see and the box was sealed with tape by the store.

Inside there was a commercial invoice.

Can I expect that I will be sent a bill, or have this got through?

So I recieved a Duty & Tax invoice from FedEx.

I don;t know how they cauculated the Duty but it came to £42.50 (£12 of this is a collection fee). So £30 duty on an item that cost £50 - £70 including delivery. That sounds like to much VAT!

6 pages of the invoice are like computer code - weird!

OK. So what happens if I ignore this, are going to take me to court for tax evasion?

you will eventually get letters from debt collectors if you dont pay. if you still dont pay your credit/credit score may suffer

personal experience. most of the duties were not applicable as i returned the packages to the sender. had to provide evidence of the returns which was a PITA so i dont bother ordering internationally unless 1. i am willing to pay the duties 2. i know the retailer marks down the packages

i would advise you to pay them unless its mistaken in which case you should talk to the CSR (if they even respond)

In US I just pay/grumble/remember and move on. The amount does seem high though, 2 yrs ago was tagged for $140 on a Japanese purchase by USPS, thought of contesting but after a little research did not.

I for one would not ignore, could lead to just more issues credit/FedEx etc.

Good luck

I have checked and they have got the duty wrong, that maybe down to La Garcoone marking the declaration at higher than the sale price - not sure? Will have to dispute.

Another item I purchased off eBay got held in Border Control - this is the first time this has happened - I've had to fill out a long form and supply evidence of the value. Either seller didn't put a customs declaration on the package or did but customs don't believe the value that was marked on package.

I'd love some more input on the best shipping method to NYC from EU.

Here are two experiences:

Fransboone UPS: (Netherlands) Ordered Alden shoes (~$600 value), got charged a brokerage fee (~$65 (might have been more, dont remember), after much arguing, got them to remove it by stating it was goods made in the US and returning to the US.  It took almost 2 weeks of talking to them on the phone.

Meermin: USPS: (Spain) Value ~$450. Took a few weeks longer, had to sign, picked up at USPS, no fees, no customs.

I'm about to order a pair of C&J boots (UK) (MTO) and am debating on what to do.  Its 30 pounds (~$45) more for postal service vs. UPS.  I'm thinking of paying more now, going with postal service and not worrying about customs fee and the brokerage with UPS.

Any thoughts?

Ask them nicely to mark the customs from as GIFT and low value.

Does anyone know if shipping with USPS first class international from US to Canada includes door to door tracking, and not just domestic tracking until the package reaches the border? Thanks.

Question:

I've ordered something from a webstore, but now after the order was shipped, I've received a communication from the shipping company asking for a proof of value - for example a bank or Paypal receipt for the order. If I don't provide this, the package will be returned within a set number of days.

I believe the webstore who sent the package have marked down the value. Im not sure, but I've read that they tend to do that. Personally I don't really mind paying the customs at all, but I don't want to get the store in trouble by documenting something that is contrary to what they have (possibly) documented, if this will get them in trouble.

I've sent the store an e-mail explaining the situation but no answer as of yet. I guess it's sort of sensitive because who is inclined to incriminating themselves in written text?

What should I do?

Who's the shipping company? I would tell them to use the documents that were included with the parcel, that's what they're there for.

new oki-ni site has VAT deducted by default if shipping outside the EU
