RLBL Gosforth Calf Lace-Up Shoe with Tux

Hi,

I'm new to SF and want to say, first, that it has been a huge help in learning about men's fashion, particularly when it comes to questions about suits and tuxes.

I'm looking to purchase a shoe that I can wear to black tie events, including my wedding. Ideally, I'd like to get a pair that aren't relegated to wearing with a tux. From what I've read, it's becoming increasingly acceptable to wear a pair of (Balmoral) Oxfords, so long as they have a nice finish. To that end, I've been looking at the RLBL Gosforth shoes, which happen to be on sale.

I've been hard-pressed to find any reviews of these shoes. Can anyone comment on them? In particular, what is the quality of their construction (I've read that RLBL shoes have been made by Crocket & Jones in the past)? Can they give off enough shine to be worn with a tux?

Thanks

Without looking at the shoe in person it's hard to tell the make, but RL website shows the shoes to be made in Italy, so they're not C&Js. For black tie, spit shine these and you'll be fine. You'll have a shoe that you can still wear apart from black tie affairs. I don't have personal experience with this particular pair of shoes but I'll bet they're way the hell more comfortable than any patent leather rentals and certainly more versatile than any black patent leather shoes you'll purchase.

Thanks. I hadn't made the connection between the shoe being made in Italy and not being made by C&J. Unfortunately, it seems that not a single RL store in the country has these in stock and the ones that I spoke with weren't familiar with the shoe. Does RL sell online-only items?

If they're out of stock online your best bet is to try calling individual stores. I suggest the Madison Ave store in NY. the Chicago store and Beverly Hills as those are there largest store and most likely to carry more BL and PL items.

The Chicago store didn't have them in stock, which was too bad since I was there for the holidays. I ended up getting them from RL online.

The shoes arrived, but look too matte to be worn with a tux, in my opinion. They look great, otherwise, and I may keep them as a dress shoe. My only concern is that they are a bit stiff and uncomfortable - the toe box is tight and the seams rub against the side of my foot, as if the laces got caught in the shoe. Is this something that I should expect to go away with a bit of break-in?
