My favorite is the Classic last, but that's because I don't enjoy chiseled last of any brands at all. You should be able to get your initials nailed on the shoe, or maybe your chinese last name (Ethan had it done before). I thought shoe trees should be included at the $1,600 price? Anyway, I would opt for the hollow shoe tree. They are a work of art,extremely light and strong which makes it a good travel tree, and well worth the $100 extra.

They do have different lasts as well, such as the Sailor last and a Modern last I believe. The Modern last is a slightly elongated chiseled type last. You could find more pictures of it in the other Saint Crispin thread ("Some pics of Saint Crispin shoes?")

Regarding the trees, the way I understand it is that Leathersoul/ Tom very generously donated a pair of MTO EG shoes for the RMCH auctions. My winnning bid was 1600 something, that figure is not relevant to the shoes per se.

The EG MTO program is quite inflexible, eg you can't change lasts. So I decided to go with StC which has been okayed by Tom and Fok - the basic cost to Tom for StC (no trees) is about 150 more than EG, which is nearly the same as the extra EG boot cost which Fok has said he'd cover. So I can get a pair of (standard) StCs at no extra cost.

But the trees will cost extra, and true MTO (anything other than specifying different leathers basically) adds 10% to the shoe cost. So things like nail patterns and changing lasts/ sole specifications would be covered by this 10%. Stuff like metal toe taps are an extra 50usd. I think the StC veterans can chime in here.

Being a total MTO and StC newbie, its taken me a lot of thinking, umm'ing and arr'ing and asking questions to get to the point where I have more or less decided that its the StC 505 with faux reindeer. I thank Fok, Tom and Will Lau of Leathersoul for indulging me on this. What I haven't decided yet:
Whether to do two leathers eg a different leather for the strap/ saddle portion a la G&G Oakham
Last - classic last or something else eg chiseled
Sole - standard or the one above like tchoy
Nail pattern - chinese sounds a good idea
Trees - I'm still on the fence, I'm not going to travel with the trees...

That 10% MTO doesnt sound familiar to me. Last time I was in Leathersoul, all in all I paid $1,600, had a shoe made in Classic last instead of Chiseled last (Saint Crispin 104 in burgundy on leathersoul's website), made some width adjustments by adding 2mm on both side of my toe, was offered metal toe taps but declined (maybe it would have costed more), and it came with shoe trees. Personally I dont like the sound that metal toe tap makes, so I opted against it.

I guess it makes sense that since the auction you won is worth probably around $1300 or so, that the shoe tree and extras are not included. I would get the hollow shoe tree though, personally I don't think a solid wood tree is worth $150.

Lasts that they have are:

Classic, Chiseled, Riva (chiseled but i think there is a minor raise/bump in the toe), Modern, and Screwdriver. Not too familiar with Screwdriver and Modern. There was a Purplish Saint Crispin shoe on the Modern last posted on SF before sometime.

Also, since its for RCMH 2012, I would have that written along with the size/model number which is usually written under the tongue of the shoe.

My choice (at last!) - 523 U throat oxford in faux reindeer.



I was toying with the idea of a Oakham-esque contrast 505 monkstrap, but then I already have that shoe that I only crack out now and again. This 'RMCH 2012' will be a daily work shoe.

Awesome choice - get the Trees, as they are a work of Art alone and such a "special" pair will feel complete.
