San Francisco : Anyone know of a place where I can have toe taps installed?

Also, what are the advantages of getting the metal ones vs the plastic ones?

Cheers

Most people here use flush metal toe plates rather than toe taps. No place in SF to do that to my knowledge though.

Thank you, LIquidus! I may ask a tailor or maybe a representative at Wilkes.

Cheers

I don't know if you are asking for flush caps or not, but if simple plastic capping, you can purchase cheaply on EBay, and install yourself. They come with caps and nails, you provide the tap hammer and sweat. Until recently ( 1980's forward) Very few people ever used toe caps, even with bespoke or MTO. Most sole wear is generally off of heel and mid sole. Yes, there are some who pronate when walking and actually lift off of toe , but 99% do not and toe wear is so neglible that the rest of sole will require resolving before there is any appreciable wear at all on toe.
It is, in other words, an aesthetic. If sitting, with legs crossed, you want to convey the quality of shoe with Fiddlebacks, sole painting, flushed toe caps- so be it.
Hell, I started wearing EG in the 80's and NO ONE got toe caps. I am sorry , as this becomes a bit of a peeve for me as most wearers never knew of until Vass and a few others offered . Really? Do you need, or do you want, so others can see the architectural flourish of the shoe.

I used to put taps on the toes, sides and heels.

20 years ago I stopped and went to Topy, have it applied to brand new never worn shoes and replace it as it wears.

A Topy sole looks much better than taps as a side benefit.

Or you could just replace leather soles as they wear.

I completely agree, and the investment really pays off as sole never needs to be replaced- highly practical and functional as well
