Our tenth auction is for a half canvassed suit from the
Rick’s Kansas City store. A labor of love, proprietor Jeff Covitz was in the film industry before he came home to take over the reins at the store that his father founded in 1978. Before that, his grandfather had a tailoring shop in the Brookside neighborhood of Kansas City.
I talked to Jeff about his store, and he tells me that in addition to a lot of overstock, he brings in a lot of his own brand suits with a modern but not aggressive cut, at a price that reflects on the quality but on the confidence of the customer who doesn’t care about a brand name – reminds me of the original Filene’s Basement and even Barneys, an upstart bringing a little chutzpah to the local retail scene.
