Americans: More British or Italian in style

A friend and I were having a discussion about American style. Clearly our roots are British but it seems to me that we are moving in more of an Italian direction. I say this because the younger crowd seem to prefer comfortable, soft shouldered clothing, odd jackets, blazers and the like. CBD lines are blurring, like it or not, and the more casual approach will soon be the norm (IMO). Thoughts...

American style is definitely its own animal but much more influenced by the British.

Soft, Campanian style tailored clothing is only worn by a very small percentage of Americans. Walk down Madison Avenue during the week and you will see 85% of suits are standard boxy American cut for an American build.


On the subway, I will occasionally see young guys in narrow trousers, double monk straps or longwings, 3-2 soft jackets, probably loud socks and immediately know they read blogs - its a fad. I am positive that in the future we view this:

Great point emc894, but casual, soft and easy seem very American to me. (Love the two photo's btw. I remember that Armani look being all the rage).
