I think it's because a lot of magazines (and other "fashion" websites) seem to promote alternative styles like that. I've read in dozen of magazines where the "fashion gurus" of said magazine have said it's completely acceptable to wear suits and sneakers (or whatever) for a more fresh and rocked look.
Same reason why you see people in the most ridiculous suits and shirt combos, it's to stand out and not look like a boring trad. The timeless, classic and correct styles we praise over here, may seem like typical Old-man style to the average man wearing a suit 3 times a year (and often in very casual environments).
That's the only explanation I can come up with. Classic, correct and traditional comes off like boring to many people.
