Is it acceptable to add employees on Facebook?

I don't see an upside with this

A teacher friended me on facebook once. I accepted because I liked him and didn't want to offend him, but found it profoundly awkward. If you're not friends with said coworker outside of work, probably best not to.

LinkedIn, go for it. That's the whole point of that site.

It puts them in a really awkward position if you friend them. One of those "technically we have an option, but really we don't" type situations.
 

Do not do it. Gossip and talk about what you do will spread faster than a wildfire

I'd advise against adding employees. I've known of cases where this has caused problems for all parties involved.

I think it can be done as long as you can draw a line between work, and private life. If you can't see yourself working with the person after they expose some personal stuff on facebook, then you know your answer. 

sure, why not? shouldn't be putting stuff on the internet that you'd be ashamed of having a coworker see or know about, anyways lol.

Facebook? No. Absolutely not. I have a strict no-colleagues rule. Like acid said, it's hard to see an upside. Plus it comes with all sorts of possible problems. It's just not worth the potential hassle.

LinkedIn is a bit different, because the whole point is that it's professional networking. I think the biggest potential issue is that it would be easy to know when the person is searching for a new job if they start doing things like updating their profile, etc. I could go either way on that one.

If I'm friends with people at work, and I/they move on to another company, I'll add them on facebook at that point.

Although in one instance, I now once again work with a facebook friend at another company. Ah well.

My former boss added me, and I never accepted. I suppose I could go accept at this point.

No benefit to being facebook friends for the employees. A boss requesting to be a friend would put everyone in an awkward position.

I am friends on facebook with people I work with and those who report to me if I actually consider them a friend. So far everyone I have added I do stay in touch with if they have left the company or moved to other roles.

If I wouldn't be friends with you outside the work place I do not add them.

A boss adding you on FB is weirdly intrusive and almost offensive, I find.

Adding a boss on FB... I don't know why anyone would want to.

Then by all means email a link to your profile here on SF to your entire group of coworkers.
